Hi, I have a strange problem with a system 7.5.3 I never had before. Note this is a System running in BasiliskII emulator. To which I've assigned 256 Mb of RAM. It loads only part of the extensions that are in the extensions folder. The Extension Manager control panel only "sees" part of these (the ones that loads at startup). Lots of the others, like QT 4, just doesn't load at start up, system do as if they aren't there. I've run SOSDisk on this 7.5.3 system image, booting from another one, but it seems fine. Any idea what could cause this ? |

Sounds like it chokes on one and exits while loading. Which is the last one that gets loaded successfully? Which is the next to be loaded (and possible culprit)? I know I would pick up "Exentions Overload" from the Macintosh Garden and use it to get an idea about what extension does what and why it might break. You're probably aware of the 'old way' to solve this. Take out the extensions and then add them back in one by one to see what the troublemaker is ...

Yes I've been trying that, putting ext out then back and see if they load, what is strange is that it doesn't crash at boot like when there is an extension causing a problem. It just doesn't want to see some of these, acts like if they weren't in the ext folder... very strange. True, have to try "Extensions Overload" on that system. Anyways , I've installed a brand new fresh 7.5.3 system and setting it up now (long).

It's an odd error, that is for sure. I haven't heard about it as well and maybe it is somehow emulator-related? Would be interesting to know if the problem persists after your re-install?

Thought about it been an emulator error too, but my other disks images (7.6.1, 7.0.1) all works fine... So I think it really comes from that very install. I must have installed something that messed up the thing at one time. Anyway , I've nearly finished setting up that new 7.5.3 so it can do every thing like the broken one could do. And it runs fine . For System7Today, would you be interested in small tuto for doing screenshots from cmd line of a system 7 desktop remotely , via telnet ? It's a mix of keyquencer macros, Applescript, and Tooldeamon. Useless but fun, things I like ... If yes, could make it for next week.

Hmmm... It could be as Bolkonskij said, the system choking on an extension somewhere. Although less likely, sometimes it can be a corrupted extension or a System file corruption. Another area to consider is your preferences. When I've gotten similar issues, I have tried moving my entire preferences folder out of the System folder and rebooted, allowing the System to rebuild its preferences files. I know not everything will work right, but if extensions continue, you may have the location of your culprit!

Thanks for the tip about moving the Preferences folder. I did try moving out some pref files (finder, quicktime...), but wasn't changing anything. If that happends again will try moving the whole folder. New installed system is running fine for now.

Wow Galgot, your post went over my head, lol! That's neat, some good-old early terminal-based connectivity ![]() It certainly sounds more fun and challenging than the more boring remoting in using VNC, which is still quite fun.. lol!

I found on my MacOS 8.1 system that - for whatever reason - certain extensions have their resource forks altered during startup. At first I thought it might be caused by a virus but I quadrupple checked and found nothing. Its always the same extensions so I guess they are self-altering (some sort of copy protection or license check maybe?). And naturally if a crash occurs during startup, those resource forks tend to get corrupted. So I always keep a backup of those files, as they won't load right anymore once that part of their data got damaged. On top of that I use Extension Overload -> https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/extension-overload to manage unwieldy customers in my Systems folder.

Whoa! Altered is a pretty serious thing happening there! ![]() It might be worth it to try locking your extensions then using the finder info box to lock each one individually? It doesn't seem like 'normal' system behavior for them to change during boot-up, you know?

Well cballero, at first I thought so, too, but as I wrote I did a *deep* analysis of this sheyit and found no malicous behaviour resulting from it. On top of that, its only three or four (out of almost 70) extensions that experience this behaviour. And since I do know that some apps register runtime data and/or license info in their resource forks - so they are meant to be self altering - I can only assume this is the case for these small pieces of code as well. Some programs even store prefs info in their resource forks. Under classic MacOS that part of a program's code can grow quite large, as it holds by far more than just icons and like GUI info. I got apps on my system that personalize themselves to a specific user by altering their res-data. Kind of like a copy protection scheme.
