I just had to  force quit another attempt at unpacking a .sit file on my 8600. Who else has trouble with StuffIt expanding files on 7.6.1?

I thought it was just me. I trashed everything (program, extension, control panel, preferences) and reinstalled but the problem persists. I talked to fellow admin Knezzen, who told me had a similiar experience with StuffIt 5.5.1 and 7.6.1 - upon expanding a file the program would open up a window but stall. No progress bar ever appears.

I never had this kind of problem on any other System software, so I figure this might be something 7.6 specific.

Anyone else with the problem? Would be nice to know if it is a general StuffIt problem.

Another person with the same trouble (link is retro browser compatible) I found while browsing for solutions. Quote from it:

Weird problem with StuffIt Expander 5.5 not expanding StuffIt archives. Apparently I'm not the only one who experienced this, but a default install of StuffIt Expander 5.5 would work on all archives except actual ".sit" ones which naturally would cause a giant headache as this was by far the most common type used.

That makes at least three people having trouble with 5.5 and 7.6.

Same here - I’ve had issues with StuffIt 5.5 on 7.6 and 8.6.  I’ve noticed though that it usually happens if I’m dragging a file to the desktop alias.  If I launch StuffIt, select expand from the pull down menu and select the file to expand, the issue doesn’t happen as frequently or predictably.

Aha, that makes four. Do i smell an issue? :-)

I use the described method of dragging to an alias as well - might give the other option a try. Though for now I'm settling installing StuffIt 5.0. Will report back as to whether or not the problem persists.

Ok, I may have this (partially) solved on my Mac.

I had kicked off all remnants of StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 from my 8600 (including the extensions and preference file). I went ahead and installed StuffIt Deluxe 4.5 to test if the issue was there already. It didn't - it worked as intended. Since a lot of Mac Garden files are stuffed with 5.5 or later and that version obviously made some significant changes to the compression scheme, I was not able to open a lot of downloaded files with 4.5, however.

The solution was to upgrade to StuffIt 5.5 (not Deluxe) downloaded from here:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55

Be aware there are two pages on the Garden, one for Deluxe versions and one for the 'normal' version. Lo and behold, after I installed that one I can expand and SITup files with no problems again )as my recent uploads show=.

If you run into the same issue, you may want to try the non-deluxe version on 7.6. Would be cool if anyone could verify this one working on his Mac too.
