All, Wondering what is the fastest machine for running 7.6 that I can find without too much trouble on the low end mac swap list or ebay? Also any advice on memory or any other tweaks that would not be too difficult to find parts for. My project now is to locate the fastest machine for system 6,7,8, and 9 each and set them up in my ancient mac lab. Thanks, Rick |

Here's a list of Mac's that will run 7.6, excluding 68K, Workgroup Servers, and Powerbooks. I listed all of them, since I'm not sure which models will be easier to find. PowerMac 5200/75 LC PowerMac 5300/100 LC PowerMac 5400/200 PowerMac 5500/225 PowerMac 6100/60 PowerMac 6100/66 PowerMac 7100/66 PowerMac 7100/80 PowerMac 7200/75 PowerMac 7200/90 PowerMac 7500/100 PowerMac 8100/80 PowerMac 8100/100 PowerMac 8100/110 PowerMac 8500/120 PowerMac 9500/120 PowerMac 9500/132

The fastest would probably be a 9600 with the carrier card and a G3/G4 ZIF upgrade. The ZIFS can go to 1 or 1.1 GHz. Fastest stock would be the 604e 9600.

Sorry, I was looking at Apple's 7.6 compatibility chart, and they don't list the 9600... Information on this varies... 7.6.1 looks like it should work on the 9600. Not sure specifically about 7.6. 7.5.5 might also work. http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47341?viewlocale=en_US If you look in the enablers section at the bottom, there is a note that the 9600 shipped with 7.5.5, doesn't support 7.6, but does support 7.6.1...

oh my gosh that 9600 is a beast. Would probably cost $200 to ship but maybe I can find one within driving distance. If not, I saw another posting about the a G3 upgrade card you can still buy new so I'm thinking of a 6100 with the Sonnet Crescendo/NuBus G3 400 MHz.

Quote from: "aftermac" Here's a list of Mac's that will run 7.6 I'm sure by "7.6" he means 7.6.1. There wouldn't be any reason to run 7.6(.0) specifically. And the answer is the 9600. And wouldn't it be easier to say "any Power Macintosh before the G3" rather than listing all of them?

I guess if he doesn't have a 7.6.1 install disc then it would make a difference. In certain instances being 1 version off can make a big difference, so it was worth mentioning. I listed all the models that were 100% guaranteed to work with 7.6 specifically. Apple also lists the 7300 and 8600 as not being 7.6 compatible. I guess the easiest thing would've been to post a link and say look for yourself.

haha, I'm glad to see Mr. Palka has not changed. I do appreciate the listing. I just ordered a 6100 to use with the G3 upgrade. I had a 7100 which was pretty speedy but managed to send it to goodwill accidentally during a purge of old electronics.

Got a brand new PM 7600/132 that was running OS 8.6 but I installed latest 7.6.1 instead and I must say it runs pretty fast and smooth, especially since I've installed the drivers for my graphics card :-)

Is a ZIF-G3-upgraded or ZIF-G4-upgraded PM 7600/132 (or any other Mac) even able to boot System 7 still? IIRC, G4s were only ever supported in OS 9 (plus by a bad, specific version of OS 8.6). No idea about G3s.

Excellent question, Jatoba! So, here's a XLR8.com product page of their MACh Carrier G4 MPe ZIF daughter cards for PowerMacs and Clones they made compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and up: https://web.archive.org/web/20010405093919id_/http://www.xlr8.com/ProductInfo/machcarrierg4/index.html So to answer your question, the answer is apparently not, just as far as Mac OS 8.6, just nothing lower than that! ![]() Edit: well, let me eat my own words now. A PM8100 80MHz can use a Sonnet Crescendo G3 400MHz card. The card supports System 7.1.2, the OS that Apple introduced it with. It can officially run up to 9.1 but 'unofficially' it can also run Mac OS 9.2! :O

I boot 7.5.5 in my PM9500 with a G4 upgrade card, which I believe is a Sonnet Crescendo 700 G4.
