I've tried getting info on this over the years but no one has any idea. My 3400c starts, I hear a chime, then I'm presented with a white screen with no cursor. The board doesn't have any corrosion AFAIK, the pram battery never leaked, and I tried resetting the pram and pmu, plus I disconnected the internals one by one to make sure none of that caused issues, and no matter what, I get a dreaded WSOD. There's got to be a solution... |

You can try an external monitor to see if it problem is with the video sub-system, which would let you know if it is a bad internal screen. If you have another old Mac you can start the 3400 in SCSI disk mode and use the other mac to check if the system is in good shape. The "bong" is a pretty minimal check for OK and only reports the status of the hardware and does not mean the machine will boot. You can also check the status of the OS by pulling the hard drive and starting the 3400, if it comes up asking for bootable media, then you know it is a hard drive problem. The same can be checked by trying to start from CD or floppy.

With an external monitor I still get the WSOD. Same thing with no HD. I’ve read about SCSI disk mode but have never tried it. I guess that doesn’t apply to just using an external SCSI HD, of which I have. I’m gonna read about SCSI Disk mode, run some tests and report back...

By the way, I thought that SCSI Disk Mode was really only to transfer files. Will I actually be able to run diagnostics on my powerbook that way?

SCSI Disk mode aka Target Mode allows you to mount the 3400's internal hard drive as an external drive on another Mac. This allows you to run diagnostics on the hard drive, copy files to and from the drive or to install a new operating system on the hard drive. If started in target mode then connected to another Mac it would also allow you to boot the other Mac for the 3400 hard drive. When in target mode the 3400 screen should display some moving image on the screen. If the 3400 goes into target mode normally but still has a white display, it would indicate you have a failure in the video subsystem. This is a link to the Apple Service Manual for the 3400 if you do not have a copy. <https://cdn.preterhuman.net/texts/computing/Apple_Service_PDF/PowerBooks/powerbook_3400c.g3.pdf>

As it turns out, sometimes a cursor will appear but the system is frozen (mouse won't move). Other times it's just a white screen. But something i noticed is that I'm not able to reset the PRAM. The key combo for it won't reboot the machine and it stays at the frozen white screen. I'm gonna take a look at the service manual.
