Saw this upload at the Mac Garden today for an MPEG encoder/player, named MPEG/CD

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mpegcd

I haven't tried it as yet, and don't know how it behaves, or if it can stream audio too. But it may be a good mp3 player and AIFF convertor.

Requires a 68020 or higher CPU. Must have built-in FPU (68LC040 is out)

Its strictly a converter for Audio CDs to AIFF. No option there to play single files or stream them over the net.

Thanks for looking, although maybe you missed something (not much tho'), as it is a player with streaming ability built in.

BUT....

I should have looked at the ReadMe for version 2.0.5 before getting over excited about this player :(

What the uploader of that software failed to mention is that this is a (very) crippled shareware.

Quote from: the ReadMe doc:
This version allows encode/decode of 5 seconds of audio content.

A copy of MPEG/CD which allows unlimited decode/play can be obtained by sending a check for $25 to: Kauai Media
And that $25 is just for the player version.

For $195 you could get a full Player/Encoder version :P

The ReadMe also mentions a streaming version (MPEG/CDS) but doesn't give a price.

Quote from: About the Streaming Player version:
The MPEG/CDS client allows MPEG encoded data to be played in a Point-and-Click streaming fashion from within Netscape without file download.
All very well, but the only version available is that sad copy at the MG :P

Well, if you can find a menu option to play back MP3 files, please post it. I tried it out and it wouldn't even accept an MP3 file for "drag'n drop".

From my trial run the MG version is strictly an Audio CD ripper with the option to play (only) the CD's audio part.

This piece of crock, even if it did work, will give you only FIVE SECONDS of play before it asks you to send off 25 Dollars, to hear the rest of the track.

If you read the docs that come with it you'd realize that it doesn't have menu options for streaming. It relies on adding its name to Netscape's list of helper apps and downloading suitable files via the browser to play. It's the (above noted) "MPEG/CDS streaming client" which I assume, offers direct streaming. Good luck finding a copy.

Also in the ReadMe docs; This software does not support MP3, only Layers I and II are supported. - and "another nail in the coffin" for this software.

My apologies to all for even mentioning this software in here before looking at the README doc beforehand. Stupid me :P

I was going purely by the info in the page description at the MG, which sounded promising and had no warning about its obvious limitations.

Unfortunately that was a mistake because this is vaporware of the first order.

That is, it is a severely limited trialware. There is probably no way on earth that you can locate the author who published this software back in 1997, even if you wanted to (fork over $$$ for it).

If you could find a copy that someone had purchased back in the day, and it was not 5 second time-compromised, then maybe it would be worth looking into further.

But until that (likely never) happens. My advice is to ignore this software. Don't bother spending 2 seconds, let alone a whole 5 seconds on trying to use it.

I'm not. I'm sticking with MpegDec, because that works.

[Update:] I see a cracked copy has since been added to the MG, removing the 5 second limitation. The cracked copy is for PPC only. It's not the streaming client version either and will never have mp3 support, and is still not worth installing IMO.

oh man, this sounded really promising, especially given the 68020 requirement made me very curious. Still, thanks for pointing this one out. Would be great to get the "Pro" version but I guess that would need a dedicated web detective (that said, Cashed, where have you gone?)

Still, while AIFF produces huge files I found it a much better alternative to mp3 on real 68k CPU Macs. Unless you want a music library of 500 songs, AIFF might be a good alternative given the cheap and abundant disk space we enjoy today. Unfortunately (with regards to this software), there's already quite a lot of CD -> AIFF converters out there, I uploaded one myself to the Garden if I'm not mistaken. So unless we get "the full thing", this software isn't probably as helpful.

Anyone into looking up the author and writing him on LinkedIn or such? I've done that before and while I got mixed results, basically everyone reacted friendly and happy to get a message from someone inquiring about their work from 20+ years ago ...

Finding this shareware author may prove difficult to track down -except for Cashed of course ;)

Nowhere within the included documents does it contain his name.

There is a web address: http://www.kauai.com/~bbal  <-- which the web archive hasn't got a copy of, the links it does have, go back as far as 1999, and all are amber colored links (not found).

Digging through his code in ResEdit (as one does), I spied the name:
Bernadino M. Barrat

Which I think could be the author's actual name.
