Whenever someone asks on Facebook etc. what they can do with a System 7 Mac the usual answer is games. Makes me feel really sorry. Don't get me wrong. I think of Games being fun and all, I just think it doesn't do the machines justice. They're still capable of doing many things. One thing I hope this forum can serve for is as a place where we exchange ideas & tips about what we do with our System 7 Macs. Feel free to open your own thread and show us what you do with your Mac! I've been inspired to write this thread when firing up ClarisWorks on my 8600 yesterday. For several years now I've been using its draw module to plan my gardening. Granted, I could use a modern computer or even a sheet of paper too, but it's fun to do it on System 7. So I amateurishly outlined all the (raised) beds, pots and berry bushes in my garden. A small table keeps track of what to plant where and when. (life is busy and I tend to forget otherwise). So i usually start thinking about what to plant around this time of the year and then keep coming back to check for what to do next. (http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/02/10/gardenplan_small.jpg) (click to load the full image) It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done. I've been using the ClarisWorks draw module for other jobs too, e.g. for planning rooms in our house (where to put what furniture). You can basically use almost every Mac for doing this line of work back to the old compact Macs. Maybe that'll serve as an inspiration for someone to use his old Mac for something other than just gaming :-) |

I love this. I'm not that into gardening, but I'm thinking of somehow start using my PowerMac 5500 and SE/30 for stuff like this. Inventory of all my car parts perhaps? Computer stuff? Good inspiration!

I use a Claris Db to keep track of my computers. Admittedly this is on OS 9, but I could easily switch to System 7 if I so desired (and I very well might at some point). Also making greeting cards with Print Shop Deluxe is always a blast.

That's interesting. The last few years my wife and me have gone back to sending actual hand-written greeting cards. It's so much more personal and nicer and we want to keep this tradition alive. Care to open another thread and show us what you do with Print Shop Deluxe, Europa? @Knezzen - keeping an inventory of whatever is something any System 7 Mac down to a Mac Plus is easily capable of. Question is if the machine will be throwing an out of memory error when you'll be adding up all your computer stuff ... just kidding :-D Next going to enhance the garden plan with an info on my stock of seeds. Don't like having to go to the cool basement where we keep our collection to check if there's still enough of X left or if I'd need to buy it first.

I'd love to! I'll gladly do it once I get the time. I might even make a video to go along with it (and edit/encode it accordingly to be viewable on a Power Mac as well).

I bought a brand new (old stock), sealed copy of Appleworks 5 for my System 7 machines. I am now using the Clarisworks/Appleworks ecosystem for all of my word processing and office needs. My work takes place at a computer so thousands of documents are being created using it. I also bought a couple old monochrome HP laser printers with ethernet cards in them and I print from my 9600 over the network into the other room, all from Appleworks, of course.

I love Claris Works / Appleworks and still have the last version running on OSX installed. One feature (?) is the flexibility of the draw program. If you open up a draw document you can then copy and paste parts of word processor, spread sheet and paint documents onto the draw document and then move them around as objects. I used to use this abilty for making displays all of the time.
