Arguably one of the nicest features of System 7 is the slim design that yet remains upgradable in every single aspect. Lately, when personalizing the Apple Menu on my 8600 to fit my needs, I've been wondering if there's actually better solutions to Apple's on-board System 7 apps like Find File, Calculator, Scrapbook, Chooser and the like. Thus far I've unearthed Calculator II by Joe Cicinelli, which I find better than the original and thus replaced it on my system. See a comparison screen here. Are all of you using the stock Apple gear? Any improved 3rd-party solutions working on your Mac? What populates your Apple Menu? |

I have for many years added an alias of the Apple Menu Items folder to the Apple Menu Items folder... (with a Space at the front, of course). Also a fan of the AppleScript "Add Item to Apple Menu Items"!

What would the benefit be of adding an alias to its own folder? I use a little control strip module called Bunch 'O Apps. You click on it in the control strip and it has any program you add to it pop up in a list. Very handy!

But aren't the Apple Menu Items.. already in the Apple Menu Items area? That's why I'm confused.

Let me jump in here real quick! ![]() I've used an assortment of tools on my System 7 through OS 9 desktops and I have always enjoyed using a few tools of the trade so-to-speak. I know that you began with a DA what to add, keep and/or replace question, but look at my approach and see if it helps out a little bit ![]() So here is a link to one of my past desktops: (http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/02/18/pb.jpg) Where I'm using BeHierarchic to tame the slew of things in my Apple menu folder. Surprising to me is that I actually left most of the system's original Apple menu items in there. Typically I put the original DAs in their own folder and then add my own favorite substitutes and must-haves, like that sleep-now button. Having said that, I've also have enjoyed using TaskMenuBar listed in my list of control panels because it adds icons to whatever I open most frequently, acting as a Apple menu item replacement of sorts, which likely explains why I hardly touched Apple's stock menu folder items

@Syntho: It's not for access to the Apple Menu per se, it's for access to the Apple Menu Items folder in order to open it in the Finder as a folder, for easy addition and modification of items.

So, I've got another candidate replaced on my 7.6.1 with a better equivalent. Kicked Apple's stock Scrapbook to the trashcan after a few days with Scrapz 1.3.2. It essentially does the same thing, except for .. well, in its author's words: Quote It adds features such as import/export, resizeable window, partial selection of text and pictures ,multiple scrapbooks, gallery view and more. Has been running absolutely reliable. Author was working on a 2.0 version with more features, though not sure if it was ever released. (Mac Garden has nothing on it)

I don't recall ever seeing any versions past 1.3.2 myself. Where did you source yours, was it here? I know the site below has that version , along with an assortment of other goodies: https://macfreebees.tripod.com/ Version 2 may have never been born, but you never know!

I found it on one of those BBS in a Box CDs. Don't recall the number, would need to look it up. Lately I found it to be great fun to burn them and then pop them into my 8600 for a journey of discovery. Great to relax in the evening, together with one or two bottles of beer and webradio in the background :-) No traces of 2.0 thus far. I think it never made it to the public. So I've added 1.3.2 to the in-the-works optional update list as the last available one. So far it's the best replacement for scrapbook on System 7 I could find.

I use this as a search utility. It's small, portable, and fast. I'd recommend it. ![]() https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/find-stuff-102
