Hello! I was wondering what control panel for having a wallpaper you all would recommend for a PPC Mac running Mac OS 7.6.1. Thank you!

Mac OS 7.6.1 can use the Desktop Pictures control panel from Mac OS 8.1 just fine. It offers support of adding desktop pictures as well as desktop patterns and it's fully compatible with the OS, well, it's part of a newer OS, so it's Apple-made and approved by default ![]() I've used others which I have enjoyed, but I remember that one of my favorites was consistently somewhat glitchy here and there, I want to say with System 7 specifically, although it may have been with newer OS versions, so I'm hesitant to even mention it due to that downside ![]() Another very fun one is not uploaded to the Garden I don't think, but it works very nicely with itself. In other words, if you put a desktop picture on the desktop, its other modules get glitchy as well, but as long as you don't do that one thing, its pretty fun, especially on a Mac fired up to do fun stuff in, and to me, that's pretty much any non-production Mac ![]() If you want more details on the two runner-ups I mentioned, let me know and I'll get all the info I need to post full info and reviews on them for you

Ok, thank you! I was unaware of being able to use the Desktop Pictures control panel, but that makes things a lot easier since I have 8.1 also on here.

Absolutely! Just about everything short of the contextual menus and a couple of other things here and there in Mac OS 8.1 are not compatible in 7.6.1. If fact, one of my favorite third-party control panels, PopupFolder, https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/popup-folder-201, works a treat in Mac OS 7.6.1, but not in 8.1 ![]() I also detail a (not-a-very-elegant) trick (using a System 7.5.x System Folder) to add PopupFolder menu shortcuts on its app page.

Why don't you pick up Decor? I've always liked it best. Does what it should but otherwise gets out of the way.

There's also DeskPicture! (aka DeskPict) It was released in various versions over the years (including a version for Mac OS X!), and was also briefly a part of Now Utilities (v3).

Choices, choices, choices galore ![]() Ahhhh, the beauty of the Mac, there's always more than one way to skin a Mac ![]() Honestly, I was being lazy in that I have both System folder installed so it was just a matter of borrowing the control panel I place an alias of the other matching System Folder sub-folder and toss what I want to save space (I made the volume too small, or I stuff it with too many programs is more like it, lol). I do remember using all of the third-party tools on System 7 quite fondly, and tbh, since my jump to Mac OS 8 I never thought of borrowing like that even to test. I do tend to recall random tidbits I read about from time to time and love 'updating' my System's software. It's all part of the Mac tinkering fun!
