The other day I posted a link to a piece of software, that came from Macintosh Repository. That software and link to the Macintosh Repository was obtained via an internet search on DuckDuck Go. I did not bother to look at the Macintosh Garden and if I had I would have found the software on the Garden. That just got me curious as to why the Garden's software did not turn up on my search.

I did a couple other random searches for older Macintosh software, and noticed that none of my searches showed links to Macintosh Garden. Does the Garden block searches? Is the fact that Macintosh Garden is http instead of https what is stopping it from showing up in search results?

Yes, searches are being blocked since we have encountered a flood of emails from “lawyers” wanting us to take down software. Macintosh Garden as well as System 7 Today are using both http and https to be compatible with all browsers :)

The general consensus is that whoever wants to find the Mac Garden will find it. Preferably Mac afficionados and tinkerers - not so much lawyers and the gimme-an-emulator-one-time-visitor.

That other page ... it offers kind of a subscription disguising as a "mandatory donation". He makes money from people finding it through search engines, hence depends on visibility.

His page came about after scraping all content from the Mac Garden for free and then putting it up on his SEO optimized website. It is offering the stuff the Mac Garden community had created for sharing among it. (nota bene - for free!)

I have been among those people spending many hours creating screenshots, descriptions, scanning manuals, creating disk images. I won't say any more about that page or I'll have to wash my mouth with soap.

I was not aware of that. Search is tightly integrated into just about all newer OSes and desktop GUIs. I tend by default to look for everything via search. I will pay more attention in the future. Damn I do hate people who seek to profit off the hardwork of others.

@wove - Up until recently this used to be a very profitable business scheme for German "Abmahnung" lawyers, who often demanded several hundred Euros for supposed Copyright violations via robo-mail.

Even now the profit margins might be lower, but by increasing the volume you can still squeeze a living out of it.

Macintosh Re, Repo, Rep... ugh, I can't bring myself into completing that word in the same context as Macintosh :P

The Mac Garden has a reasonably good "Search" feature, located near the top center on every page. The MG search gains more functions if you are also logged in. There's every chance you'd find the same item as found on that other site (no surprises there).

@MTT - That "other site" openly admits that they sucked 99% of their content from the MG. There is even a post about it on one of their pages. I think its meant as an assurance of quality. ;)

Yeah, its more "special" you're certainly right about that one. Specially since it makes you pay for your downloads.
