Hello S7T members, I spent some time on this site and forum in late 2006 after acquiring a NIB 9600/350, and always found it to be an indispensable resource. Thanks again to Dan for taking the time to create and maintain something that so many of us find useful. Things got a bit more hectic in mid-2007, and I re-boxed the 9600 after returning it to a near-stock configuration (except for the installed, matched 512 MB of EDO RAM). This particular machine is truly mint, inside and out, and I knew I'd get around to playing with it again later. I have fond memories of 7.6.1 in its heyday, and remember my disappointment as later versions of the classic Mac OS became slower and more cluttered. Mac OS X is great, and my main production machines run 10.5 and 10.6. Still, nothing equates with stepping back into to the simple, isolated environment of System 7. Aside from the feelings of nostalgia, I truly find it to be an effective way to get some serious work done (of course, a little Wolfenstein here and there doesn't hurt, either). I recently decided to get the 9600 back on its feet, and ordered a Radeon 7000 from this eBay auction. I booted the machine about a week ago, and checked things out. Everything seemed to be functioning perfectly, just as it was when I boxed it up. The card arrived yesterday. When booting the machine again to install Dan's R7000 drivers (with the TwinTurbo card still installed), I noticed some strange color flickering/color shifting on the LCD connected via a ViewSonic Mac-to-VGA adapter. This was not present upon initial boot a week ago. I went ahead and installed the drivers, installed the R7000, and connected it to a 24" Dell LCD via D-Sub/VGA. (This particular Radeon only has VGA out). The ATI drivers seemed to recognize the card, and the menu reported graphics acceleration enabled. However, I was not able to select the appropriate display resolution (1920x1200) in the Monitors & Sound control panel. The highest resolution option provided was 1600x1200. Then, I noticed the same color flickering/color shifting on the Dell monitor! Again, this is using a different graphics card, and a different monitor. I subsequently reset the PRAM. Now the machine displays no video at all upon startup. It still boots to the Finder as usual; I can verify this by successfully performing a standard shutdown using Power+Return after boot. I am going to remove the Radeon and try the hardware in my other classic PCI-based Mac, an 8600, tomorrow when I have a little more time to troubleshoot. Thought I'd get this out there in case any of you have experienced similar problems. Thanks in advance for any input. |

You need Resolution Manager, found here: http://www.nasolab.com/freebies/index.html Quote from: "p72mad" Now the machine displays no video at all upon startup. It's probably starting up to 640x480 at some super high refresh rate that your display doesn't support since you just reset the PRAM.

Thanks for the hint re: Res Manager. Traced the flickering/color shifting to a bad VGA cable. I replaced the stock TwinTurbo in the 9600, reset CUDA and PRAM again, and everything seemed to be back to normal. I installed the Radeon 7000 into my other project machine, an 8600/200. Removed all four VRAM modules, reset CUDA and PRAM, and the card was detected upon initial boot. Installed the S7T drivers and Resolution Manager, and was able to successfully select 1920x1200 @ 60Hz. Something is wrong with the image. I'm getting wavy lines on the LCD, and the picture lacks sharpness. Auto adjust does not correct the problem; neither does manual adjustment of phase or pixel clock.
