Hello,

I am writing for a friend of mine.  He has a Mac Plus and he needs floppies for the OS.  He has the sad face mac showing and was told he needs to reinstall the OS.

I have system 7 on CD but he has floppies only.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Let people know where you are.  There may be someone in the same city or near with a set of floppies you can beg borrow or buy.

Sorry about that.

I live in San Leandro, CA.  Which is in the San Francisco bay area.  If anyone can help out I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Of course the main thing to remember is that the Mac Plus floppy drive takes 800k floppies.

If you need system floppies, Operator Headgap sells 6.08 on 800k floppies for under $13 including shipping.

http://stn2.headgap.com/resale/FMPro?-token=13508739&-db=ProductsC.fp3&-lay=WEB&-format=items.htm&-sortfield=SortID&-Max=40&category=software&-find

as for empty floppies, once you've got the system floppies, you can buy 1.44 MB floppies from an office supply store for cheap, pop in the Disk Tools floppy, and use the Plus to format the 1.44MB HD disks as 800k two-sided DD disks. That's not an ideal solution, but it'll work. There is a chance that the HD disks will slowly reject their DD formatting, so back up often.

If you don't like the idea of having that happen, you could look for 800k floppies on Ebay or on vintage computing sites, or order two copies of each disk from Operator Headgap and use the second set as data disks.

You should be able to use the install disks to install a minimal Plus system onto an 800k floppy with plenty of room left over for TeachText and a printer driver. I think I even managed to smush Appletalk extensions onto one to do Appleshare and print to a networked ImageWriter II.
