Has anyone had any luck getting an Orinoco Gold PC card working on a Powerbook 1400 running OS 7.6.1? The WaveLAN driver doesn't work on that machine. Is there another? |

It will work, if you have the correct older 16-bit card (non-cardbus) and the correct settings in the control panel. These are the same cards many of us here have used successfully, including me personally.

Apparently there are some cards labeled ORiNOCO that are not 16 bit. Check your antenna block at the end of the card. It should be "chunky" not rounded. Also, I had some problems setting it up on mine. I finally got it working but I cannot remember what I did.

Ok. I have rebooted in 7.6 where I am using WaveLan. Here is what I see when I go through it. Both Ethernet and TCP/IP go out through Ethernet slot 0 Extensions WaveLAN®CARD WaveLAN®DLPI WaveLAN®SCAN Control Panels WaveLAN® Setup There are two versions of this control panel in my control panels - one is 32 k and the other is 64 k. The 32 K version was installed later (about 2 hours later so I was in the middle of going through what you are going through). I know I had problems in figuring out what installation to use. I am not sure if I installed the PPC verion and had grief and installed the 68xx version over. I cannot remember the install options right off the bat. However, if after your install you have the option of selecting Ethernet Slot0, you are probably there. What I have works on a PB 1400 with a Sonnet upgrade. Note that if you can dual boot on this machine and be at 8.6 or better, go and get the ORiNOCO software and try with that OS. It is much easier to install and use. Then you will know that the wireless card works. If you cannot find it and need it, I do have a copy I can send you. I remember having a heck of a time finding it . HTH Dave

When I installed WaveLAN on my PB 5300 not too long ago, the installer defaulted to the 68k version. I dug into the custom options and found out why: The PPC version of the drivers apparently doesn't work on the 5300 and the 1400. You'd think I would've noticed this after installing WaveLAN on two 1400s, but I guess I never payed attention. So make sure you have the 68k drivers installed.
