Greetings from the Netherlands.

I have been visiting System 7 Today for many years (10+) but never signed up for the forums. About when I decided I should, Dan closed them down.

I remember being very impressed with the looks and retro feel and the way the web page rendered on older browsers and platforms. It blows my mind, the fact that I was able to browse to System 7 Today, open the forums and register my account, all from my Powermac 8600/200 (which is running MacOS 8, but I shall soon deal with this discrepancy).

Glad I finally registered, though.

Well, it was about time, after 10 years!! Just kidding ;-) ... welcome to the S7T forums! Great to have you here, eelco!

Yes, co-admin Knezzen and me put a special emphasis on keeping this place compatible with System 7 browsers. Backporting the lastest version of Simple Machines Forums to late 90s HTML was a hell of a job :-D but I hope it was worth the efforts and gives you a good reason to sit down on your old Mac and connect to S7T.

And hey, it's cool do register for a service and all on a 8600/200, isn't it? Like back in the day....very capable machines, I know first hand since I'm a proud owner of a 8600/200 myself :-)

Now feel free to join the discussions! :-)

Worth adding: I love to collect vintage machines.

On the Macintosh side:
- Mac SE FDHD and Classic
- Mac IIci and IIfx
- Classic Powermacs (6100, 5500/275 in black and 8600)
- New World Powermacs
- One Intel Mac (Mac Pro 1,1)

Let's not forget the Macint osh Portable, although that has ceased to work.

Apart from that I have a lot of 8-bit machines (Apple II, C64, BBC Micro, TRS80 and MSX) and some PC's too.

I love the insight these machines give into a totally different world of computing and how different the computer market was back then. System 7 Today fits in nicely, in that respect!

@Bolkonskij: all the hard work is very much appreciated and completes the experience for me (having not used Macs before late 2007).

Better late. than never, as they say! Thank you nevertheless.

That 8600 is still running OS8 though...

I have since fixed said discrepancy. Furthermore, I have proof! (HTTPS required, sadly).
It's all in Dutch, but should you scroll to the photos and videos section, you will find screenshots and a video of startup of my Powermac 8600 running System 7!

You're clear now - welcome to System 7.5.5 :-)

Tell me, doesn't it feel snappier than OS 8 on the same machine? :)

Very much! Although I must say (and I may be swearing in church) I sometimes prefer the more polished look and feel of OS8 over System 7, other times I feel the opposite way.
Thankfully I have options to choose from. :-D

Once I get my Macintosh IIfx up and running, I will be firmly locked in to the System 7 world.
