In the 7.6 updates section there is Speed Doubler 8.  Is it possible to find the matching version of RAM Doubler. The version that would be used in OS 7 through OS 8.6

I am thinking of this to be used with my PB 1400's which are extremely RAM challenged (64 MB max) and have slow bus speeds. For these machines it could possibly be a real boon.

I did some hunting around and basically found all sorts of old articles but that was about it.

I have never been able to locate RamDoubler 8 either.

RamDoubler V1.6 is easier to find and works with OS 7.6. RamDoubler 2 came out while OS 7.6 was the current version. RamDoubler 8 was a free upgrade for RamDoubler 2 users and it was of course compatible with OS 8.

I believe that RamDoubler had a couple more updates over time as well, but I think with the release of OS 8.6 machines not only came with a great deal more memory capacity (and memory was much cheaper by then as well) and the OS's built in virtual memory was faster and more stable.

Thanks for that Bill.  The highest version I can find mentioned on the net is 9 and there is an upgrade from 8 to 9.

I have two copies of 1.5.1.

I'd like to get up to the versions that would work on both 7.6.x. and 8.6. I find myself up on 8.6 just because WamCom Mozilla works at that OS level and does a fairly decent job on style sheets, especially after you tweek about:config.

I used RamDoubler 8/9 on my PB1400cs/117 for awhile, and was never really convinced that it gave any improvement in performance over the virtual memory scheme in Mac OS 8.6 or 9.  There may have been enough bottlenecks in that system to obscure the benefits (e.g. - no L2 cache).  My major reason to keep it running was disk space - with a 750MB hard drive, the extra 128MB used by virtual memory to acheive the same RAM expansion as with RamDoubler  was confining at best.

That said, I just fired up my PB1400cs/133, which has a 6GB disk handed down from my Pismo, running 7.6.1, and installed RamDoubler 9.  It boots just fine, and maybe does feel a bit quicker on a short 'test drive'.  If you can find a copy of the RamDoubler 9 installer, I'd go for it.

RamDoubler 9 (and 8) has a protection scheme that writes a custom file into the System Folder, and there are some validation checks against this upon boot.  You really need to keep a copy of the installer available if you do a lot of messing around with system upgrades, renaming or swapping the hard disk, etc.

A kind soul sent me versions of RAM doubler to play with.

I have had the chance to try RD9 on my OS 8.6 partition, PB 1400, G3-333, 64MB RAM.  It has made a big difference in the performance ofthis machine.  I am running WamCom Mozilla as a browser.  It is really balky at rendering pages.  I have wondered if it was a video problem or a memory management problem.  With RD9, loading is improved by 30% - 50%.  I went to YouTube and started a 1:30 video.  It was not pretty, but it did play it without crashing (at about 2 frames per second).  This was impossible before.

It would appear that Ram Doubler is quite effective on a Ram starved machine.

I have now had achance to play on OS 7.6.1.  This is so much faster than 8.6 and the apps used do not demand as much, so the immediate impact is hard to judge. It did appear to be more responsive.

In terms of stability, I tried running Opera 5. This has crashed repeatedly and pretty much immediately.  I was able to give it a good run.  It did crash eventually, but stability was improved.

Further note on stability, on OS 8.6 I am running WamCom Mozilla and Eudora.  I believe that there is a memory leak in Eudora.  Starting Eudora first, stopping it and then starting Mozilla would from time to time cause Mozilla to crash on launch. It would be OK if both were left running.  I have not seen this behaviour with RAM Doubler.
