I have been using System 7 continuously since it was released in 1991 (although I recommend that 68k Mac users stick with System 6 if possible). I have been using my latest machine, a Power Macintosh 5400, continuously since I bought it almost 10 years ago in July 1996. I used System 7.5.5 for years until I finally upgraded to 7.6.1 in 2000, and I have been happily using it ever since. I love the look on people's faces when I tell them that I still use System 7 at home!



I thought that I would reproduce the following list of applications that I have used with System 7.6.1 (this list was originally posted on my web site). I hope other users will find it useful to see which applications are compatible with System 7.6.1. In some cases (for example, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat) newer versions of the software are also compatible with 7.6.1, but I have not bothered to upgrade.



I would reiterate Dan's suggestion that everyone who is using System 7 should install Speed Doubler 8, which I have been using for years. It is essential. Other highlights are the "Program Switcher" extension listed below, which gives application switching functionality equivalent to Mac OS X and Windows, and "KeyQuencer," a great macro utility. For desktop pictures, I prefer the BackSplash II extension listed below to the DeskPicture extension that Dan recommends.

This is a superb list. I've been trying to recall all the software that was new and hot back in the day, and I think you just refreshed my memory on a lot of it.

Thanks your list and it is very useful.

May I know if those CAD application(s) can open *.dwg files (version 2000 or up) and edit it ?  I was trying to find some application(s) to convert or edit it on OS761.  Could you please share some of your experience, thanks a lot.

Boy, that's a pretty comprehensive list. I always wanted to try 4D's relational DB for the old MacOS, but could never find -- or afford - a copy.

I actually learned enough unix to get started in Unix Administration back in the pre-linux days with a pirated copy of Tenon's MachTen. I being allowed to bring my MachTen Centris610 and set it up in my office right next to my SGI and Sun pizza boxes and integrate it right into the NFS/NIS environment.

Since it seems the copyright holders arent even wasting their time harassing people over decade old software, A lot of older stuff can be found through limewire (which I still run on Classic MacOS 9) at http://bitzi.com/society/Macintosh_warez
