Greetings everyone.  It has been a few years since I have posted anything.  I have a super clean 7100 that has OS 7.1 (I think) on it.  I acquired the Asante "ethernet dongle" (I forget the name of it) from a Classic Mac list on Google.  Problem is...I can see the network, but can't configure it to do anything useful.  Do I need to upgrade to the 7.6.1 "gold standard" or is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks for any help.

Define "I can see the network" and also define what a "useful" thing is you'd want to do but can't and why you can't.

Hey Dan...it's been a long time since I've chatted with you.  Well...I think the issue is that I really don't understand how 7.5 (in my case...I checked) can be configured to work with my network.  I have been spoiled with auto configs like automatic DHCP, etc.

I see that 7.6.1 has many of the features that I have become used to.  I simply want to use my 7100 as a "daily driver".  I don't do graphics...so I don't need killer video.  I want a basic web surfer, music server, etc.  My 7100 has 128 MB of RAM...someone dumped some serious cash into this old warhorse.  It HAD OS 9 on it, but I want the performance gains from 7.6.

I'll keep trying, I guess...it's just frustrating.

Early versions of OpenTransport work as far back as System 7.1. Older versions of OpenTransport are a bit buggier than the later versions, however they will have better and easier configuration than the Classic Networking environment.

If you're on a PowerPC you should definitely go up to 7.6.1, which does have the much easier-to-use OpenTransport networking built in, among many other benefits.

7.1.x is really lousy on those - almost all 68k code still.
