I have a friend up north with several computers running both Classic ( 7.6 through to 9.x) and OS X via Expostfacto. When in OSX His computers can see each other over the network. When in classic,none of the computers can see each other. I have been the route: Appletalk control panel - routed through Ethernet TCP/IP - Ditto Chooser - Appletalk is on Sharing - File sharing is turned on and at least one folder is shared on eahc machine Users and groups - Users are defined and there are read write priv's for everyone. Router is a Linksys - do not know exact model Am I missing something really dumb here? TIA Dave |

Mac OS X does not use AppleTalk by default - it uses Bonjour. You have to turn on AppleTalk for the desired networking device (only one can be on at a time) in Mac OS X Network preferences, located in System Preferences. This is a different preference panel from Sharing preferences. This will not affect Bonjour operation.

Hi Dan, Sorry, I was not clear. The classic machines will not see each other. They will see each other and dedicated OS X machines when in OS X , but when in classic they see nothing. I had him check out two machines both running on classic systems last night. I even had him check IP mumbers and try connecting that way. From either direction, they "could not see the server". So this is classic to classic networking here.

One more point. the classic machines can see the net. They just cannot see each other. Dave

Further investigation: 1. Had him turn on appletalk on his wife's iMac ( intel) and record her IP address 2. Made sure he had file sharing over TCP/IP checked on his classic machine 3. Had him go to Chooser on his machine and select AppleShare. 4. His wife's machine did not show up. 5. Had him input wife's IP address 6. Voila - she showed up and he was able to connect. I've come to the conclusion that his router will not transmit appletalk. I know that both Airport and Netgear support Appletalk. Are there other routers out there that do? dave
