I have an 8600/300 (604ev processor) with a 1 GB partition on the HD with 7.6.1 installed in the partition. Attempting to boot from that partition, it gets as far as the "Welcome to Mac OS" screen then the machine hangs. However, if that HD is removed from the 8600 and installed in a 7300/180 (604e), 7.6.1 boots just fine from that partition. So what's the problem with the 8600? |

What if you try booting the 8600 with extensions disabled? To do this, after chime hold down shift until you see "Welcome to Mac OS" at which point you should also then see "Extensions Disabled"

I was never able to get my 8600/300 to work with the generic OS 7.6.1 installer. The only way 7.6.1 ran on it was if I installed 7.6.1 from the machine specific CD that came with the computer. The 604ev is a Motorola PPC 760 processor and is very closely related to the G3 (PPC 750). It uses speculative processing and a different cache mechanism for the 604 processor in earlier PowerMacs. I was never did locate an enable file and was never able to tell the difference between the installations of OS 7.6.1, but I was only able to create a working system for the 8600/300 using the install CD that came with the machine. bill

Thanks Wove. I suspected something strange like that. Unfortunately what I have are some generic 7.6 CD's. In fact, the installer didn't work on the 7300; I simply copied the files over from the HD from the IIfx, which means they're emulated 68K code on the 7300. Even so, 7.6.1 is considerably faster on the 7300 than on the IIfx. One problem on the 7300 though is that 7.6.1 doesn't recognize either the onboard ethernet or the 10/100 PCI card. Maybe a function of the 68K code?

Probably more to do with the II and the 7300 having different ethernet equipment. You should try to find a 7.6.1 retail CD and install fresh on the 7300.

I've looked recently on eBay for a full 7.6.1 CD but nothing listed. Someone on this forum had a link to a bunch of them for sale but it's been many months since, so that's probably a dead trail. The entire idea behind trying to get 7.6.1 on the 8600 or 7300 is just to see how much faster it is than on the IIfx; no overwhelming need at this point.

It will be a lot faster with the PowerPC-native bits than without.

I just ordered a full 7.6.1 install on eBay. The hyperlink is annoyingly long, so I'll just give you the seller's name: applepartsnw I'm in a similar boat. I'd like to run 7.6.1 as fast as I can. My 8600 is running 9 but my 3400 is running 7.6 @ 200MHz and it can open a Word file faster than an Intel Tiger. Would a dual processor 9600 run 7.6.1?

All PM9600s even the dual processor ones can use OS 7.6. I do not think that any of the Classic Mac OSes used the dual processors to great advantage. SpeedDoubler allows for multi threading in the Finder. I am not aware of any utilities for the old Mac OS that report on multiple processor usage, but it would be interesting to see how much use is made of the extra processors. Of course any use of the additional processors would speed thing up. BeOS which runs on the 9600 as well makes full use of the multiple processors. DayStar made a 9600 clone that came with 4 processors. The DayStar 4 processor card would also work in the PM9600. bill
