I have on old Macbook of mine that I want to find out what's on the hard drive.  I need a boot operating system.

Well, no Macbook will boot Mac OS 7.  Only 68k or PowerPC 603 PowerBooks will.

You can download System 7.5.3 from Apple here.  System 7.6.x, the final version and the one required by the very late 603 and 604 systems, is not freeware unfortunately.

Are you sure there is something on the disk if it don't even have a OS installed? Installing a new OS will probably clean what's on it too.

The MacBooks is Intel CPU's only and cannot run anything else that OSX. Are you sure it is a MacBook? Go over to http://apple-history.com/ and find your computer, and check what type of OS it supports. If its less than 12 years old you probably can't run System 7 on it..
