Hi all, I can't believe a forum like this exists! I've been pulling apart old mac since I was 7 and still have an old mac that is running as we speak from 1995. Unfortunately it's only 68K and I found this site trying to find an MP3 player for it because the sound is great with headphones! Could anyone point me in the right direction for an software MP3 player? |

For 68k, you're stuck with http://www.jwgdesign.com/mpegdec/about.htm - 68ks don't have enough power to fully decode MP3s at highest quality. However, if you have PowerPC you can find a great MP3 player here: http://main.system7today.com/software/soundjam/soundjam.html

The mp3 player didn't work ![]() I loaded an mp3 file and pressed play and it didn't play. I tried setting the quality to the lowest but that didn't seem to help. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you try encoding the MP3 at a lower bit-rate? My PowerBook Duo 2300c Struggled to play an MP3 at 192 kbs, 44100 Hz in Stereo. When I re-encoded it at 64 kbs 32000 Hz in Mono, the MP3 played just fine. Worth a shot if you have not tried it already. A smaller data rate requires less CPU horsepower to decode than a higher data rate. Its worth a try if you have not already. iTunes does a great job of batch encoding, just be sure to pick out the new files from the old ones (the new files will usually have a '1' just before the .mp3 extension) and don't delete your originals! You can also optimize the files to play based on your 68k machine's abilities. For example, if your computer can only output mono sound from the headphone jack, then stereo encoded MP3's will have extra information that will go unused, taking up CPU time and hard disk space. You can also check the Sound control panel to see what is the maximum frequency output your Mac can do. If your mac can only output 22050 Hz, then encoding at 44100 Hz will add extra information which will be wasted in the end. I hope this helps. Good luck!
