I have an Apple CD 150 that seems to work fine - other than I the fact that I have no CD Caddy (yet). So I bought an Apple CD 600e, but when I restart and hold down "c" it won't boot from disc. I do have an Apple CD extension in my system folder, but it's version 3.2. I don't know if this extension would work for the 600e. Does anybody out there know how I could boot my Performa 430 from disc using a 600e? |

The first question would be, "Are you sure the CD you have is bootable?" Many burned CDs are not bootable. It might also be that the drive does not get up to speed before the system gives up and moves on to another drive. You might wish to let the system boot off the hard drive then see if it will restart using the CD. If you start it you start it from the hard drive, you can also use the Startup Control Panel to set the CD as the startup device. bill

The extension in your system folder is irrelevant for the booting process. The computer has to boot before it can read an extension into memory. Everything the Mac uses to boot your computer, whether it be from a floppy, hard drive, or CDROM, is contained in ROM.

Can your computer see the CD when you're not trying to boot from it? Like, after it starts up and you put the CD in?

No, it won't display an icon on my desktop after I load a cd-rom. That's why I thought it may be a driver issue. I know my system is dated, but I assumed that most systems had a drive bootable option written in the BIOS on the ROM.

It could also mean your CD is burned improperly, especially if you have the CD extension and it still isn't being read. Or your drive is bad...
