I have recently bought a LC2 running System 7.1P2. I am interested in upgrading it to 7.6.1, and from the system specs I think it'll run 7.6.1 well. I just don't know the process of going from 7.1 to 7.6. Do I have to upgrade through all the versions in between (7.5.3 to 7.5.5, etc.)? Or could I just go from 7.1P2 to 7.6.1? Also any upgrade info you guys have on the processor, memory, etc. would be helpful... And does anyone know where I can get my hands on Apple's EtherTalk driver? |

MacTracker lists System 7.5.5 as the highest OS that the LCII can use. I am not sure that is accurate though. System 7.5.5 is available as a free download from Apple. You will find all the older system software here. Most of the important update are available on System7Today as well. Apple EtherTalk driver is part of the system software and should be part of any system installer you use. Generally you can directly install any system version you wish, depending on the version of the installer you have. System 7.1 can not be upgraded to System 7.5 or 7.6 unless you have the 7.5 or 7.6 installer. System 7.5 can be updated to 7.5.5 and OS 7.6 can be updated to 7.6.1 by running the appropriate updaters. bill

According to Apple, it can indeed run 7.6.1. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112185 Although, on a 16 MHz 68030 on a 16bit bus, 7.6.1 is going to be very slow. In fact, 7.5.5 is going to be very slow. I'd probably try to stick with perhaps a clean install of 7.1.1 (System 7 Pro) if possible.

Thanks... System 7.1.1 it is... I would try to go higher, but if the lag is that noticeable I guess it won't be worth it. I'm glad to know that I won't have to dig through mountains of FTP logs to find EtherTalk, my eyesight is already bad enough...

Have you a copy of System 7.1.1? They can be pretty hard to find since it has not been released as freeware by Apple.

I started out with System 7.1 on a Classic II. I thought it was the cat's ass. When I bought my 575 I was eligible for a mailin offer on the subsequent release of 7.5. Once I became familiar with 7.5 and some of the really interesting upgrades that it offered, I was unable to work in System 7.1 again. For the record, I ran System 7.5.3 on my Classic II, which also had a 16 MHz processor on a 16 bit bus with a hardware memory cap of 10 megabytes, and it ran very well. So my advice would be to give 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 a whirl. If you're satisfied with its performance, and you're partial to its features, as I am, you couldn't hope to run much better on such a dated machine.

If you do decide to go as high as 7.5.5, then you might as well just go all the way to 7.6.1, which will perform roughly the same but is much more stable and has a few other enhancements.

7.6.1 wasn't available when I had my Classic II so I can't really say how well it performs on a 16 MHz 68030 processor. I do know, however, that 7.6.1 ran quite admirably on my LC III -- which had a 25 MHz 68030.

I have found a website ( www.welovemacs.com ) that does offer the Sonnet Presto Plus 66/33Mhz 68040 with FPU. 10BaseT Ethernet and 32MB RAM (p/n LC3-66FT) for $150.00. I think it would be a reasonable investment for the performance it would offer and the certainty that it would run my choice in OS well. Has anyone had luck with the 7.5.3 freeware release from Apple and updating to 7.6.1?

7.6 is not an update for 7.5. It's an entirely separate release of the Mac OS that you must buy. You do not need to install System 7.5 in order to install Mac OS 7.6 or the free update to 7.6.1. The free version of 7.5.3 from Apple works fine. I believe the Sonnet upgrade that you're speaking of plugs into the single PDS slot of the LC II. You realize, of course, that stuffing a processor upgrade into this slot will preclude you from adding things like ethernet? Personally, for an LC II, I would opt for an ethernet card with an FPU slot for a 68882. I think you'd get a lot more mileage out of your LC II with an ethernet card than you would with a processor upgrade.

I sound elementary, but forgive the slight ignorance... I've been head deep in the Linux kernel for way too long. I'm still knocking the dust off...
