In Mozilla, there are hidden preferences that are accessed by putting about:config in the URL bar. These can be edited to change the preformace characteristics of the browser. This is even true for WAMCOM Mozilla running on OS 8.6 - I now have it rendrering faster than IE on system 7.6. So, I figured, Netscape is the sort of the great grandfather of Mozilla - can it be done there. I typed about:config in and sure enough, the preferences come up, but they do not appear to be editable. Has anyone done anything with the about:config settings in netscape communicator 4.8? |

I upped the max number of connections and enabled pipelining.It installs default for dial up connections. Here is a really good article .. It is not made for WamCom Mozilla, but the hidden preferences are the same as for OS X versions of standard Mozilla http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9020880&pageNumber=1 I have yet to find a complete explanation and settings of all the about:config items. I think this puppy is just about infinitely tunable if one knows what they are doing.I keep this site bookmarked because it is the best that I have found so far. My thought is because Netscape also has about:config, there is probably also a way to to tune it. It does not however appear to be from the about:config screen. Hence my question if anyone had been there before. Another random thought - In WamCom, I wonder if it is possible to tune it so that it would run on 7.6? That would be prety interesting...even if one had to put in an errant extention just so the program could read that it was there on start up. Dave

Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 9 use the same version of CarbonLib, which is version 1.6. Overall, Mac OS 8.6 has a lot more in common with Mac OS 9 than earlier versions of Mac OS 8. My tweaks of Mozilla did help it quite a bit, at least in my perceptions.

IE 5 also has some advantages over WAMCOM too.
Basically, if I'm wanting to download a bunch of files from the web, I'll use WAMCOM. If I'm just wanting to quickly check a website for something, I'll use Internet Explorer. If the site I'm wanting to check does not render in IE 5, I'll revert to WAMCOM.

But what does that have to do with editing Netscape 4.8's about:config page, or whether or not Mac OS 8.6 is your preferred operating system?

I was contributing to the discussion on the similarities between 8.6 and 9 -- a tangent that was introduced by someone else and also commented on by yourself. Given the many similarities, I was merely pointing out that I preferred 8.6 over 9.x.x. I did not feel that I was straying off-topic as the original poster had initiated the tangent, and you also took a step down that proverbial fork in the road. I did not see any reason for me to restrain from doing likewise. "Monkey see, monkey do," as they say.
