I have Microsoft Office 2001 installed on my beige G3 and it is much more capable than AppleWorks 5 -- which I also have installed.   Microsoft Word 2001 is about the best word processor I have ever used in Classic Mac OS.   Entourage -- which is also part of Office 2001 -- is about the best email client I've found for Classic Mac OS.   Entourage does more than just email, but email is the only thing I use it for.

I have absolutely no use for PowerPoint or Excel, so they never get used.

In my opinion, it is never 'evil' to use the best software you can find/afford for your Classic Macintosh.  Whatever gives your old Macintosh the most life is *good* in my books.

Office 98 is the last version that will run on System 7.  It requires Mac OS 7.6 and a PowerPC processor.
