isn't it fun using system 7 on some of the later model ppc's ? It's quite fast. How do you find iCab's speed on  your pb1400 ?

I usually found iCab's performance quite lousy and unstable.  You might like to keep iCab for when you need it, but for general use (viewing text and images basically) try Netscape 4.8 with CSS turned off.  It is the fastest browser.

Yeah, definately.

iCab is not the greatest, but it 'works' well enough.  I like Netscape navagator 4.0.8 though.  I dislike the entire Communicator package.  Both fart-out on modern java-laden pages though.

Wasn't 4.0.8 only available as Communicator?

Nope.  I have an old installer file that I found on an archive CD-ROM of just Navagator.

I am also going to give a few old Mozilla builds from their repository a try.  i know that 1.2.1 will run down to 8.6, but there is a lot of missing documentation on their website.  I think that the latest browsers for pre 8.1 run on the 1.0.+ build, but there is that mysterious missing 1.1.+ area... dunno.  I'll have to dig around.  If I could find an old mozilla SDK I'd see if it were possible to compile something for 7.6, but all that info has gone the way of the dodo...

Netscape Navigator 4.08 was released. The referenced link provides links to the Netscape archives, which unfortunately no longer work. A search through Netscape archives seems to indicated that only V 4.8 and newer are still available

I believe the Mozillas are all Carbon apps.  The earliest versions of Carbon are compatible with Mac OS 8.1 I believe.  That would explain that.

I doubt System 7 compatibility... I vaguely remember trying.

But this is swinging pretty far off topic.  We can pick this up in a better suited folder.  "Hello" is a pretty lousy topic to be talking in depth about something like this.

EDIT:  Actually, I'll just split it into it's own new topic.  Carry on...

This is a working link to download Navigator 4.08 for Mac. Should have dug deeper before the first post.

Yeah, I just checked out the structure... unfortunately, there is no way to port the later versions to non-carbon systems that I can see.

Just for kicks, I also just downloaded Mosaic, MacWeb, Opera, and Mozilla.  The first two are ARCHEIC, and the second two seem to be carbon apps.

Ah...yes.

I compiled a list of PPC browsers from about a dozen different websites.  I have no idea which are 68k, PPC MacOS or Mac Classic (carbon), but here they are, not including the ones like AOL or eWorld that require a  specific ISP:

Cyberdog (requires OpenDoc)
iCab
Netscape Communicator
Netscape Navagator
Internet Explorer
Mozilla
Chameleon WebSurfer
DaniBrowser
Mosaic (various flavors)
Arena
Grail (required Tcl/Tk)
HotJava
MacLynx
MacWeb
MacWWW / Samba
NeoPlanet
NetShark
Opera
TkWeb
WannaBe
I/O/D4
miniWeb
Tiber
Video On Line Browser
Lichen Software

This fellow has a link archive site just for Macintosh web browsers.  He goes right back.

FWIW - I loved MacWeb on an LCII
