Installed office 98 for compatibility reasons, but as it starts a bit slowly and needs lot of RAM, I will also install something else for actually writing with.

I have among others different versions of Apple/Claris Works, Nisus 4, iText, FrameMaker 2 and whatnot. This is the kind of app I use least, but seem to have most. Funny thing, that.

At the moment I am thinking to go the WP 3.5e way, but not sure as I have not really really used any wordprocessor heavily.

Opinions appreciated.

WordPerfect is nice and fast, and free.

I use AppleWorks 5 exclusively on my System 7 machines, though.

A lot of people tell me they really like iText, although I don't use it much.

There is also SimpleEdit:

I try to avoid Microsoft Office as much as possible.  I don't have it installed on any Mac OS X computers, and I have it installed on only one System 7 computer, just in case I get a word file I need to open, which is thankfully becoming a rare occasion.

test drive the AppleWorks/ClarisWorks you've mentioned. Very good programs both.

these are also productivity suites; having word processing, database, spreadsheet, drawing and paint applications that merge nicely. you also get, though a bit dated, email/fax/internet/terminal capabilities with both apple and clarisworks.

again, both are also quite capable presentation suites.

for fun, you can do nice things with SimpleText and the "color menu" and goodies hack.

you can draft things with SimpleText or SaintEdit (by Craig Marciniak) and then move them to a more complex app.

SaintEdit is a compact, though somewhat limited, but interesting editor with speech capabilities like SimpleText.

if you just need bare bones (pun intended) text editing try BBEdit Lite. BBEdit lite also gives you the internet capabilies i mentioned with AppleWorks and ClarisWorks. there are lots of freeware plug-ins for BBEdit Lite out there in cyberspace.

I have done word processing like that for years. In early computing long before the Mac, formatting was done by inserting control codes into the text that would determine the output. This was not even close to WYSIWYG and messing with the control code tooks too much time any way. So you typed whatever into a text editor, ran the text file through a seperate spell check application, went back to the text editor to inserted the control codes and then finally ran the text with embedded controls code through a formatting application which then sent it to a printer.

Word Processors make all that much easier, yet I continue to fee that I am more productive and do a better job if I first concentrate on content, then worry about format. So the combination of text editor and word processor remains my choice.

SimpleText always seemed good enough for my needs and I am partial to Word Perfect for formatting work.

WELL you have all mentioned good programs BUT i am still partial to word 5.1 it is fast has an equasion editor and publish ans subscribe and is totally system 7.

seriously
i got office 98 2 weeks ago and loaded it on my 7100 and well it is very slooow to load and IT SUCKS up memory
I think 5.1 still rocks.  You know after 14 years is any word processor that much better.  Other than being bloated with seldom used features what is the value.

michael

ps wove you are hard core!! mac on

Thank you for everybody for your contribution. My wordprocessor setup looks to be from now on:

-Clarisworks 5 as the core (ebayware)
-WordPerfect 3.5e for lenghty writings (freeware)
-NotePad Deluxe 2.3.3 for notes (shareware)
-Acta as an outliner (freeware)
-icWord to change MS Word documents to ClarisWorks (shareware)
-icExcel
-Adobe Acrobat to PDF my stuff (ebayware)

I chose these spesific ones, because they all import/export each others easily and I will not get stuck with lot of files no one can open.

I dropped the MS Office 98 surprisingly because it is combatible only with itself, rather than for the fact it eats ram for breakfast and is no Asafa Powell.

http://a-sharp.com/acta/

It is a very handy to have when starting to build a structure for a longer text, or just for keeping thoughts organised.

It is simple and fast to work with, I like it.

After using my new word processing  combo now for a while, I changed the wp 3.5e for Nisus 4.0.7, which suits my working style better.

Something I did not wrote earlier of, but which is still a part of my writing  combo is iView. I use it as a library for all of my writings (and photos etc, of course). One can add helpers for iView, so it can work with  for example Nisus files.

I do not remember have I mention it earlier in the forums, but for you who are using the wp, there is a great Yahoo group called wordperfectmac. Everything one can dream of wp, is there. Both info and downloads and the group alone, is a strong argument for using the wp.

A bit of a sidestep , but  I  made the installation of the Nisus for my 1400 from a 7200 via ethernet, as the floppy drive of the Pb went  mad. I just opened the hd of  the 1400 on the desktop of the 7200, and installer took it as a hd of the 7200.

Just check afterwards, if you need to copy  Preferences, Extensions, Control Panels or something from one System Folder to another.
