Hi, this is probably a really stupid question but I have a Power mac 6100/66 with only a floppy drive. As all the games and software I have found for system 7 is more than 1.4mb (floppy disk size) I don't have much of an idea how to get them on to the computer. Would you also be able to tell me whether or not having only a floppy drive is common with this model. Thanks! |

Yes, that's fairly common, although all 6100s have the ability to be upgraded with a CD-ROM drive, whether external or internal. Here is a cheap Apple 4x drive which will be suitable for your System 7 needs: http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-MAC-INTERNAL-4x-SCSI-CDROM-DRIVE-600i-678-0065_W0QQitemZ110154847961QQihZ001QQcategoryZ51038QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem Here is the appropriate CD-ROM faceplate, which replaces the blank one you probably have now: http://cgi.ebay.com/PowerMac-6100-others-CD-ROM-Bezel-Tray_W0QQitemZ300120929052QQihZ020QQcategoryZ4607QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem You'll also likely need a SCSI ribbon cable, such as this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-590-4521-Internal-SCSI-50-pin-Ribbon-Cable_W0QQitemZ130085529694QQihZ003QQcategoryZ42160QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem A simpler solution might be to just get an Apple external SCSI drive: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-External-CD-ROM-Model-300e-Plus_W0QQitemZ220153057155QQihZ012QQcategoryZ80286QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD4VQQcmdZViewItem Both Apple internal and external drives will work fine with the Apple CD-ROM extension, which your system probably already has, but if not you can download the Apple CD/DVD Extension 1.4 here: http://download.system7today.com/applecddvdupdate.img.hqx Please let us know which version of the System Software you are using by going to the Apple Menu and selecting About this Macintosh or About this Computer.

Thanks very much. The system is 7.6.1. Also, when turning the computer on, it doesn't start ever on the first go, and you have to turn it off then on again. It doesn't appear to be a problem, but i'm just wondering what it could be. Thanks again!

Quote from: "ShedEntertainment" The system is 7.6.1. Well at least you're off to a good start! It doesn't appear to be a problem, but i'm just wondering what it could be. Your PRAM battery is dead. It's a small battery located on the motherboard, similar to a really short AAA battery. You can pick up new ones at Radio Shack usually... Below is an image I stole from this site: http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/thanks_rob.shtml 2_my6116CD_1.jpg Quote from: "p-amadeus" or you can use stuffit deluze and segment archives into floppy size chunks, while it is slow it works! Slow as in an hour to transfer 10mb of information and then put it back together again. CD drive = worthy investment.

Many old macs can be upgraded to a quite fast one (even by modern standards). Incase you want to go wild, there is still available a new 500Mhz CPU upgrade for USD 99 for the 6100 and some other nubus'es. http://store1.sonnettech.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_32&products_id=40&osCsid=45245f1f11194576572d85b2a13e01cb Good luck for you and your mac.

install a cd-r in that bad boy. you can get a proper bezel from Schreve Systems and a cd-r, along with necessary driver and burn software from LaCie. i have a Q660/A/V with the same case which will accomodate the burner. you may have to get the additional power and scsi splitter cables elsewhere. no big price tags involved.
