Hello all,

I stumbled upon this site last year, and found it very intriguing - mainly because I spent a great deal of time working with the classic Mac OS throughout the 90s, and hadn't touched OS 9 in years (much less 7.6.1). I was inspired to put together a vintage system, and wanted to base it on a PM 9600 (that was the system I'd always wanted but never had). After buying one in terrible shape, I had the good fortune of purchasing a new-in-box Power Mac 9600/350 from some dealer that was selling several of them on eBay. I had to put it all aside for a while because I didn't have the time to work on it, but I've picked it up again in the last few weeks and I think it's finally finished. :) I found my old binder full of classic games and software and have been inseparable from this thing (Oregon Trail II, Duke Nukem 3D, Escape Velocity, Meat Gone Bad, MacBrickOut, you name it) for the past few days. My girlfriend thinks I'm out of my mind.

This thing is a workhorse. Here's how it currently stands:

Power Macintosh 9600/1000 :)

OS: Mac OS 7.6.1
CPU: 1GHz Sonnet PowerPC G4 Processor
Memory: 1GB (8x128) Micron EDO DIMM RAM
Video: ATI Radeon 7000 64MB DVI/VGA PCI
HD: 73GB 10K Seagate 50-pin SCSI
Optical: 32x Apple SCSI CD-ROM
FDD: 1.44MB Apple SuperDrive, 100MB SCSI Iomega Zip
Misc: Sonnet TempoTrio
Internet: MacWireless 802.11g Ethernet Bridge

I got a new MacAlly Keyboard from eBay, and I'm using a Kensington ADB Optical Mouse from CompUSA (thought I'd leave the original Apple ADB KB/Mouse wrapped in the box).

Anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a new/refurbished 20-22" white/beige CRT monitor, either online or in south central TX?

Hats off to Dan for putting together such a great site.

Ooo, that's a beaut!

Could you give the low-down of its speed, when compared to a more modern mac running  9 or X?

In all honesty, it's THE fastest computer I have ever used in my life. It is blisteringly fast. My main machine is a 2GHz MBP (Core Duo) with 2GB RAM, which I find extremely responsive. The 9600, without a question, blows its socks off. Boot time isn't that great, due to the fact that there is no ascertainable way to bypass the memory tests on startup (and it has to check the entire 1GB). Other than that, though, it's more fun to use than any other system I've ever touched - I find myself wanting to use it for my main work. Nisus Writer, after all, is one hell of a word processor.

Now all I need is a Mac serial printer..

Thanks!  I've been planning for something similar and it's much nicer to go for it now, knowing that it'll  fulfill my expectations.

Before Sonnet updated their web site, it explicitly stated that the 1Ghz G4 cards were not compatible with System 7.  But that remark seems to be gone from their site now.

Some questions:  With your Sonnet G4 and Radeon 7000, have you noticed any video artifacts when playing back QuickTime movies?  Particularly DV?  Because it does this on my 8500.  Also does your system start and restart correctly?  When I have my OWC 128mb modules installed with the G4, it does not restart properly, and I have to force restart it (it doesn't even chime properly - it only gets halfway through the chime).

I haven't tried any DV on the system. I did play several David Pogue video clips from old Macworld CDs - these didn't produce any visible artifacts. I'll look into the DV when I get a chance.

I did experience some startup issues when I first installed the upgrades. The first time I booted with the G4 and the OWC modules installed, the machine chimed as normal and booted to the desktop (at this point, the computer still had the TwinTurbo installed instead of the 7000). When I installed the ATI drivers and subsequently the 7000, the computer would chime very softly upon pressing the power key and the screen would remain black. I tried reverting back to the TwinTurbo without success, and the machine wouldn't boot until I tried the CUDA reset button. I played around with several configurations of RAM, G4/604e, and Radeon/TwinTurbo before getting the machine to boot successfully and reliably; it seems that the G4 (or Radeon?) didn't like having all of the RAM slots occupied when both the Radeon and G4 were installed (and I did hear the half-chime you are describing several times when playing around with different configs).

Have you tried different RAM configurations with the OWC modules/stock modules, and if so, did that have any effect on the boot problem? Also, I'd be interested to know whether you have a Radeon 7000 installed in your 8500, because I didn't experience any boot issues prior to installing mine.

My system (G4 + Radeon) boots perfectly fine (aside from artifacts) with the original memory from 1997 installed.  It only has abnormal boot problems when the OWC memory is installed.

It also worked perfectly fine with the original memory when I had a G3 installed, and with that upgrade there were no video artifacts.  However with my older G3 upgrade, it had the exact same boot problems with the OWC memory.

Interesting.

I'm curious as to whether this is a result of a different (possibly less compatible) batch of OWC memory, or a difference in the 8500's architecture vs. the 9600's.

You may want to try Casady&Greene's Speed Startup. I got a demo of it with SoundJam+ and tried it in B&W. It took 15 seconds of my startup time.

The Speed Startup has an option which is not available for all macs. It can bypass the memory test! Unfortunately the checkbox is greyed for B&W, and I got a message saying:"Not available for this model".

After the demo period ended, I tried Start Up Doubler from http://www.marcmoini.com/StartupDoubler.html
It is now free. I am not sure if it has the memory test pass option, as my first try ended before time in a no start situation. I will probably try it out later for a 2nd time, unless I can locate the Speed Startup's full version.

Could you tell about this one? Did it work straight out of the box?

http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/11g_11b_cards/11gEthAdapter.php

This is a link to the sellers page. It needs OS 9/X for configuration.

The manual is available in pdf. If any member have used this in 761, could you post your experiencies of it, please.

It do look like that this is indeed a working wireless solution for 761.

Tried to use the Startup Doubler for a 2nd time, now in an OS 8.1 mac and got into heavy problems!  I do not recommend this one.

Yeah if you read about what it does it sounds unreliable especially if you have complex system extensions and stuff.

Hey guys...I though that if you hold down the "Command-Option" keys when launching the Memory control panel, then an additional option appears to turn off the startup memory test.  Isn't this available under system 7.6?   You don't need to purchase an additional program..it's built into the O.S.!

Thanks for the info Douglas, I did not knew that, but I would really like to have Casady&Greene's Speed Startup, which do a bit more.
