1 Hardware / Your first mac

My first Mac was a Powermac 8500. It came to me 2nd hand from a nice dealer. I got it with the following specs:

200MHz 604e CPU
96MB RAM
IxMicro Ultimate Rez 128 8MB Video Card
4.3 GB HD
Internal ZIP
Floppy
Standard Ports

It was running OS 7.6. That machine is still with me today. I love it. However it has been slightly upgraded an now features:

500MHz PPC G4 w MB L2 Cache
NewerTech ZIF Carrier Card
512MB RAM (all interleaved properly)
ATI Rage Orion 0 This is a Rage 128 card but 32MB of RAM.
Sonnet PCI ATA/133 Controller
120GB Maxtor ATA/133 5400RPM 8MB Cache HD
USB2 / Firewire Card
Internal Zip250 (upped from the internal ZIP 100)
LiteON DVD/CD-RW Drive 24x Internal (replaced the original 24x CD-ROM)

My 8500 brought me all the way from System 7 to OS X 10.3 Panther. It's an awesome machine, that was definitely built to last. There was an article with Steve Woz in a MacAddict magazine wherein he too professes his love for the 8500.

My current machine is the fast G4 laptop ever produced by Apple.

Yep.

The 15" 1.67GHz Aluminum Ppowerbook G4 HR Model

The HR model features an upgraded 1440x960 LCD and an ATI Radeon 9700Pro Mobile GPU with 128MB of VRAM.

I have maxed the RAM at 2GB of DDRII PC-4200 RAM.
I just ordered a 250GB HD for it to replace the 100GB internal drive I have now.
Toss in airport extreme and bluetooth and I am very happy.
The backlit keyboard is awesome. I will never own a laptop without one.

Thanks!

The 5300 already has 7.6.1 on it. I just forgot to denote .1 update in my description of the unit.
3 Operating System / 7.6.1 on my 5300cs

I just scored a near mint PB5300cs.

It is running 7.6.1 which is awesome because all I had before was 7.5.3. Now I have images of System 7.6.1 for use.

What a lovely little machine with a nice quick OS. Runs great in the 24MB that I have in the machine. Someday soon I will source the rare 56MB card and max the sucker. Then I'll add either a PCMCIA 2BG card or a 2GB CF card to get rid of the battery drain from the HD. I might leave the HD installed, not sure at this point. Final upgrades will be wifi and that SCSI adapter that is needed to use external SCSI devices.

Hello, my name is Temetka and I am a mac user.

I have know about System 7 Today for quite a while now, but just now decided to create an account here.

I am a member in good standing on several Mac related boards (68kMLA, MacLife, ArsTechnica, PPCMLA).

I have been using Macs as my primary machine since the days of OS 8.

I just now acquired a PB5300cs (what a lovely little machine) and am going to keep 7.6 on it for nostalgia. I also own a BeigeG3 MT, PM8500/200, and a dying Rev1 B&W. I have a dead PB1400c and a partially living PB3400 as well.

My aluminum pbg4 is my main machine followed by a G5 tower for storage and now my 5300 when I want to compute but don't want all the distractions a modern machine provides.

Well talk you guys in the forums.
