1 Hardware / Help! Installing WaveLAN card in PB1400
September 01, 2007, 07:37
I'm online!  Tried your suggestion, but no luck... then tinkered with my router a bit more and disabled "Stateful Packet Inspection", and that did the trick!  I'm not sure if it was just dropping every packet directed to the laptop or what, but, hey, i'm online!

As an amusing sidenote, I noticed that two of my neighbors started piggybacking in under an hour... I switched WPA back on for now, will set up MAC filtering for all my toys later.   Thanks for the help!

the goofy thing now is that it connects to my network, DHCP assigns it an IP, and both the router and the powerbook show as connected- I can even see it on my OS X machine as available for filesharing (but get an incompatible version message when I try to connect via finder)  But... it will not load a webpage.  I tried both opera and netscape, they just try for a few minutes to load a page, but access nothing.  I can even punch in 192.168.1.1 on the laptop and login into my router config page, but that is it...  I also tried connecting through internet sharing via my airport card in the OS X machine... same thing.  Weirdness.  I also install system 8.6 onto a compact flash card in the lower slot, and booted it, and set up the orinoco drivers in there... same thing.  Everything functions as it should, except... the browser can load nothing.  i dunno.  maybe a firewall issue or something with my router.  I'll play around with it some more after class...  And no, I haven't dared throw WEP into the mix yet.  might just settle for MAC filtering to keep the neighbors out...

W00T!!!!!  I got it working!  I met up with the fellow I bought the Powerbook from, and he sold me a 1400cs to harvest for parts.  I came home and set to work on it immediately... Basically put all the good parts from my 1400c into the bottom half of the cs- the hard-drive, the ram, the G3 processor, and of course, the LCD.  I fired it up, and Voila!  My wireless card works, as does my CF reader!  It was definitely a logic board issue.  Now I am just tinkering around trying to get the internet working...  but I am up and running!  I am so glad I did not give up... I was about ready to toss my 1400 into Lake Michigan, lol!

Thanks everybody for your help- and encouragement!  Also- thanks for the tip about powerbookguy.com- neat website!

Well, no, and I haven't successfully used the card.  The only other PCMCIA cards I have laying around are an old ethernet card, and an even older kodak CF card reader.  Neither say specifically 16-bit on them, so I suppose there is the chance they could be 32-bit, hence the powerbook completely ignoring them.  But, since the card fired right up in my windoze laptop, I am convinced that the card is at least marginally functional...  One of the Techs at Wegener Media told me it sounds like the controller chip on the Logic Board has failed, in which case, the logic board is more or less junk...  I am also going to talk to the chap who sold me the laptop, as he had two 1400's for sale.  I might be able to trade, or at least play around with the other one, to see if it likes my card...

Bah.  I think I am throwing up the white flag on this one.  This laptop is awesome, but I really don't want to end up replacing the logic board or something, just to get wifi or ethernet going.  Plus, classes start this week.  I think this laptop is going on ebay.  Thanks for all the help, though!  Great site you have here!

Well, crap.  I have no idea what's going on at this point.  I replaced the PCMCIA cage (which was more of a chore than I expected), and did a clean install of OS 9, so I could try the orinoco 7 drivers.  It still wouldn't recognize this or any card.  I did another clean install of 7.6, did the appropriate updates, and installed the drivers, but the card is not recognized at all.  This is nutty.  Anybody know if the G3 upgrade card could be causing some issues?  Or anything else that would cause this powerbook to refuse to read pc cards?  I am inclined to think it is a hardware failure of some sort, which is why I jumped to the conclusion that the PCMCIA cage was junk...

Thanks for the info.  I dusted off my old windoze laptop and popped in the card.  It read the card, loaded the correct driver, and it was happy as can be.  It even made use of the little blinky lights on the card.  I was about to try the firmware updater (I still have no clue which firmware it has), but thought I would reboot first.  Not sure why I did that, but now windows won't let me log back in without a (long-forgotten) password.
So, gave up on that aspect for now.  I then dug out an OS 9.0 disk and did a clean install of that on my 1400, to see if i could get the orinoco 7.2 drivers to work...  No dice.  It won't even read the card, or any card i stick in the slot.  Doesn't even recognize the presence of a card, let alone access it.  So, I am guessing that the PCMCIA slots on my PB are hosed.  I found a replacement PCMCIA cage on wegenermedia.com for $4.00, so ordered it.  Worth a shot at that price...   Thanks for the help!  I will report back after the minor surgery has been completed!

Cheers,

Zack

No signs of physical damage or anything.  It came securely bubble-wrapped and all...

Update:  I wiped out my hard drive, and reinstalled 7.6 from scratch.  Did all the recommended updates, and installed the driver for the wavelan card.  Boom.  Exact same error message.  I am highly discouraged.

never tried it.  I just got the card today, and installed 7.6 a few days ago.  (honestly, I found this site via an article on lowendmac, and after reading a bit, was whole-heartedly convinced to go with 7.6, when previously I thought I would need at least 8.6 to be productive)

Also, the fellow I bought the card from personally tested it on his powerbook before sending it my way, so I am pretty well convinced that I am doing something wrong...

Is there somewhere I might look to find a conflicting driver or something?

Well, the laptop had 8.1 installed on it when I got it.  I booted from the 7.6 and did the "clean install", which may not be as "clean" of an install as I thought it would be... It left behind some applications and things, including office 2001 and such... So I was kind of apprehensive, but went forward and installed all the updates recommended on the site, and installed a few applications.  I also discovered today that this powerbook has one of the NewerTechnology 233 G3 upgrades in it, so I installed the control panel for it.  (prior to that, system profiler showed a 33mhz processor)

Anyways, I poked around trying to find a conflicting driver or something, but I'm not quite sure where to look...

Hello all, I am new to this forum.  I have been lurking for about a week, soaking up info to get my recently acquired PB1400c up and running.  It has been smooth sailing so far, until I tried installing a wifi card today.  It is a wavelan gold card, and I am using the wavelan 6.00.4 driver downloaded from this site.  The install goes smoothly, and the card shows up on the desktop, but when I attempt to set AppleTalk to connect via ethernet, i am presented with an error message, which reads:  WaveLAN PC Card Driver (v6.00.4)  Error code #131.3(IM).  I have been tinkering for awhile now, and have rebooted several times.  I even un-installed and re-installed the driver once.  I am stumped.  I am a n00b to System 7, and the classic Mac OS in general...  I hope somebody has seen this error before, and can help!  Thanks in advance,  Zack
