1 Operating System / newbie here

Hi guys,

I'll chime in here with my low-spec collection of prehistoric Macs which is a 540c (possibly with the ppc upgrade) and a 3400c. I stumbled upon all this at an office closure sale and didn't really intend to purchase any new hardware or Macs at all. I saw something I wanted and they said they were selling all the computer equippage as one lot. The price was right (too right as I found out when I unloaded it all and found what they had included: loads of cables, a bunch of Mac OS disks along with two ancient lappies.) I wasn't very hopeful about the prospect of the machines working as both looked as though they've been bounced around in the back of a lorry for a few million km and possibly taken a few rides under their own power on the motorway. I was amazed when I connected them to the mains, they both started and the displays are really quite lovely. I haven't seen this quality of graphics and construction on regular wintel boxes. After a bit of research I see that they sold for about 3500 pounds in their day (1994/5) so they certainly should be something special!

There was quite a lot of rubbish on these boxes so I did low level formats and installed a few different OS to see what to use. My goal is to use these as UNIX machines, mostly as extra terminals on my LAN. Presently I've got 7.5.3 running on the 540c and OS 8 on the 3400c. My 7.6 disk won't load on the 540c so I don't know what to do about getting 7.6.1 running on that machine, the disk is for the 3400. OS 8.5 won't load on the 540c (even though it could probably run it) because it does some check right after booting and says it won't work on this machine. It probably doesn't matter because I tried to install 8.5 twice on my 3400 but it crashed in the same spot not being able to read a certain file. I suppose the disk is scratched beyond use. If possible I'll run 8.6 on the 3400 and 7.6.1 on the 540 based on the recommendations I've received here and on other Apple forums.

Thanks to the forum hosters and mods for providing this forum!
2 Hardware / stupid question: is it ppc or 68k?
February 27, 2007, 14:55
Hi Wove,

I don't have the right cables so I can't get anything on these boxes except what I have on CD, they're not connected to the internet or my LAN yet.

I couldn't load Mac OS 8.5 on that box but I think it was because of some checks it does, not because it can't actually run.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look there.

Cheers,
Rand
3 Software / telnet client for 68k and ppc powerbooks?
February 27, 2007, 14:52
Thanks very much guys. I did find the MacSSH and betterTelnet apps on web searches but I wanted to hear from the experts here about which ones might be good. You never know what you'll get when you start downloading apps from the internet!

I'll begin with the included app as soon as I can get some cables and post back if I've any info to share.

Thanks all,
Rand
4 Software / telnet client for 68k and ppc powerbooks?
February 26, 2007, 22:14
Hi guys,

I don't know whether this is cross posting since there's Apple and 3rd party forums. I'm trying to find a good telnet client that will work on Mac OS 7.5.3 through OS 8. The machines are 540c (may have ppc conversion) and 3400c.

Thank you,
Rand
5 Hardware / stupid question: is it ppc or 68k?

Hi guys,

I have a 540c which *might* have the ppc upgrade installed. Is there any way to check if it is?

thanks,
Rand
6 Hardware / Can't boot from external CD on 3400c and 540c

thank you very much for this picture. It does work ok without it but if I can get one of course it's much better to use it.
7 Hardware / solved

I found on this page the info to boot from external CD. http://www.jagshouse.com/68kfaq.htm

You can press shift-ctrl-option-delete while starting up. The 600e drive must be internally terminated because everything is working fine. I can't boot my 7.6 disk though. It's a bit odd because the version 8 disk works fine.

it's the model 600e CD drive.
9 Hardware / Can't boot from external CD on 3400c and 540c

Hi and thank you for your post. That page is confusing because it says some devices have built in termination. This is an Apple CD drive and I think it should be automatically terminated. It would be better if someone actually knew whether it was possible to boot from Apple's external CD or not on these powerbooks. Maybe someone knows the answer.
10 Hardware / Can't boot from external CD on 3400c and 540c

Hi guys,

I found some brilliant old lappies at an office closure a few months earlier and I'm just now getting round to trying to bring them back to life. I've got a 3400c and a 540c (possibly with the ppc upgrade- I see the package but don't know how to check if it's been installed but it sure runs for a 68k!). These boxes both have floppy drives built in and there's an external Apple CD drive. They both start fine but there seem to be loads of rubbish installed and documents from the old business and rather than sort through I just want to start at the beginning.

I'm trying to do clean installs (that is clean by the world's meaning, not Apple's which seems not to make sense). I want to wipe all the rubbish off these drives and install new OS. I've got CDs for OS 7.5.3, 7.6, 8, 8.5, and 9 possibly others. I don't know how to do this since there's no built-in CD. I don't have any OS on floppy except something so old that the 540 won't even boot from it.

Can these boxes boot from the external Apple CD? It's got two SCSI connectors at the back and I've got it connected to the 3400c at the moment with the square adapter. When the unit is on the Mac will not boot. When I turn it off it boots but doesn't seem to see the drive. I don't know which of the two SCSI connectors on the back of the CD I should use. When I connect the CD drive and start the 3400 it just shows a grey screen with the arrow cursor and then sits there doing nothing at all.

Can anyone help me clean these old boxes up and install an OS from one of my CDs?

Thanks,
Rand
