Classifieds / Pro Tools nubus system FS
January 30, 2008, 07:24 |
Selling the Digidesign 442 Pro Tools system which can record 4 tracks at a time. Would run great in a nubus Quadra. Haven't tested it on a powermac, but it was very stable on my Quadra 650. Great audio system for a system 7 audio sequencer such as Opcode Studio Vision 3.5 which I am including for free. If you win the auction and say your from System 7 Today, I'll throw in a Opcode Midi Translator II for free. That's a 1 in 3 out 16 channel midi interface for a printer or modem port. http://cgi.ebay.com/Digidesign-Audio-Interface-Cable-442-Nubus-Card_W0QQitemZ140203219499QQihZ004QQcategoryZ41784QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Off Topic Discussion / Free CRTs rule!
September 26, 2007, 23:35 |
I have a Sony 17" CRT thats sitting in my garage. I was planning on putting it on Craig's List for free. For now, I guess it a good backup just in case the LCD fail. I have to say I don't miss the CRT. It took up so much space on my desk and gave off alot of heat. |

Hardware / 8500 in another case
August 21, 2007, 01:00 |
Yeah, once you take it apart and put all the parts you need it's fine. I like to add cards and drives to my machines, so I'm often taking them apart. I've had bloody knuckles due to the 8500 case. And the first time I took it apart, I broke the power button. |

Off Topic Discussion / g3 beige with os 8.. osx
August 16, 2007, 19:18 |
I have a beige G3 233. Have you tried over clocking the motherboard yet? I haven't tried it, but I hear it can run stable at 300mhz. Can you do a master and slave configuration with that sonnet pci controller card? The beige G3 that I have can only do one IDE drive at a time on the controllers on the motherboard, unless you change the ROM. |

Off Topic Discussion / Are there any musicians around?
July 21, 2007, 01:18 |
From my experience with older macs over the years, I recommend a Digidesign Audiomedia 3 PCI card in something like a 7500 with 7.6.1 which would give you 8 tracks (I think 16 is possible also). You could also get a Audiomedia 2 nubus , but it's only four tracks (voices). These cards are about $20 - $80 on ebay. I would get the AM3 card because you could use it in a 7200, all the way up to a 1.2 Ghz G4. Using an AM3 card let's you use Pro Tools and other audio sequencers. AM3 has alway been the pretty stable on older PCI powermacs. If you got a a G4, you could use AM3 with Pro Tools LE 5 & 6 and have 24 to 32 tracks of audio. Check out this site to get a free version of Pro Tools 3.4 for OS 9 and below. Works great with system 7. You can run it with and with out digidesign hardware: http://www.oakbog.com/PT3NuBus.html You'll need a midi interface and a midi keyboard and sound modules if you choose to do midi sequencing. And a little mixer like the Mackie 1202. Sound monitoring system, home stereo system can work or headphones. The digidesign user conference is a great resource for getting questions answered about Pro Tools http://duc.digidesign.com/ I've recorded bands and composed music as a hobby. Here is a list of my mac history and software and hardware since 1995: Mac II si - Master Tracks Pro -1995 LC 475 - Master Tracks Pro, Opocde Vision 3.0 -1996 Quadra 650 - Opcode Studio Vision 3.5, Digidesign Audiomedia 2 - 1996-2000 G4 400mhz AGP - Digidesign Pro Tools 5, Digi 001 - 2000 Mac Pro 2.66 Digidesign Pro Tools 7.3 M-Box2, 003 - 2006-2007 Quadra 650 rebirth Opcode Studio Vision 3.5, Digidesign Pro Tools III + Samplecell 2 TDM Midi and Audio hardware: EMU Esi-32, Korg X-5, MS2000R, Alesis D4, Novation Drum Station, Mackie 1604VLZ, Event PS8s, Akai MPD16, Opcode Studio 4, Digidesign 882 |

Operating System / os 7.6 on ebay
July 18, 2007, 01:22 |
I bought a 7.6.1 CD on Ebay a couple months ago. The disc says it's for a powermac like the Performer 6500, I can't remember exactly which one. The guy selling it said it would install on Powermacs. I bought it to install on an 8500. I paid $15 shipped. When I got it, I decided to try installing it on my Quadra 650 also. It worked! I installed it on the 8500 too. So if you just want the OS and don't need the books and box, then it's a pretty good deal. Here is a link to the guy's ebay store: http://cgi.ebay.com/Macintosh-OS-7-6-1-CDROM-Installer_W0QQitemZ300124703709QQihZ020QQcategoryZ80258QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting |

Hardware / Quadra with Ethernet
July 14, 2007, 08:09 |
An easy way for you get hooked up to your Netgear router is to upgrade to system 7.6.1. I have 7.5.5 and 7.6.1 on my Quadra 650 and use the app System Picker to choose which OS to boot into. I find 7.5.5 works best for the music apps I use, but if I need to surf the web or download something, I restart in 7.6.1. I can use the music apps in 7.6.1, but it feels a little slower. To connect to the internet with 7.6.1, go to the TCP/IP control panel and put it DCHP server and restart and it should be good to go. |

Hardware / LCD Monitors and System 7
June 29, 2007, 07:49 |
I got the Dell SE177FP flat panel monitor for my Quadra 650. The resolution that i'm running is 1152x870 @ 75hz. It works great, except the monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024 @ 60hz, so text and lines get a little blurred since I'm not running native. This monitor has a similar finish as the Apple Cinema Disply, so it matches the 23" I have. |

Hardware / 8500 in another case
June 29, 2007, 07:31 |
Yeah, that'd be cool if I were handy with a drill... Oh well, maybe I should sell the 8500 for it's parts and try to get a 8600 or 7500. I didn't realize it had the dreded case when I bought it. |

Hardware / 8500 in another case
June 06, 2007, 07:50 |
Does anybody know if I can put an 8500 motherboard in another case, like a 7200? Isn't the 7500 and 8500 the same motherboard? |

Hardware / 7.6.1 for Quadra 650
March 28, 2007, 08:04 |
Everything is running fine. When I had it 44mhz, every once in a while, the mouse arrow would stay in a spot. Not frozen, because I could move the mouse. It was like the screen didn't re-draw correctly. All that went away when going down to 42mhz. |

Hardware / 7.6.1 for Quadra 650

It was the Sonnet QuadraBooster 40Mhz. Got it in 1997. It was $49 back then. I think it's been discontinued for a while. |

Hardware / 7.6.1 for Quadra 650
March 06, 2007, 20:48 |
I think maybe we are talking about two different things. The Sonnet, Output Enabler accelerators that I have are a cover/cap that goes on top of a chip on the mother board, right next to the most inside nubus slot. It fits backwards and forwards, but if it's on backwards, it will be ruined. I didn't take off the processor itself, just the accelerator. |

Hardware / 7.6.1 for Quadra 650

Yup, I found the intructions after I put it on the wrong way and started up the machine. FYI, it won't do the apple chime when it's on backwards.. |

Hardware / 7.6.1 for Quadra 650
March 06, 2007, 06:37 |
My quadra was kinda broken after a ruff shipping adventure via ups. I took it totally apart, then put it back together and it healed itself. Though the 250mb hard drive died. I had a sonnet 40mhz upgrade that I put on backwards and fried when I took the computer apart and put back together. I got a new over clocking device from Output Enablers http://www.io.com/~oe/. Now my quadra is at 42mhz. I could go to 44mhz, but I discovered that my midi and audio were getting out of sync... |
