1 New Member Welcome / I use the Orinoci WaveLAN Silver
March 27, 2012, 21:53
I have successfully used the Orinoco WaveLAN Silver card in System 7.6.1 on a PowerBook 1400cs. There is System 7-specific software floating around out there, if I remember correctly that you can use to make it work.

I'm not sure if WEP works at all. I never used it. But the card does work for regular 802.11 WiFi.

Here is one how-to page:

Here's where you can get the driver:

2 Software / No MacX but will try MI/

Just downloaded the mixppc.sit - I'll have to fire up the Powerbook 1400 and see what I can do with it.

The PB 1400 is still a nice hunk of hardware after all these years quality-wise.

If I could get credible X Window use of the PB 1400, that would be great. It's been awhile since I had an ssh server set up on my Linux/Unix boxes, so I'll have to do that first.
3 Software / WriteNow still quick on PPC

It really doesn't need to be ported. Compared to Word  for PPC, which I also have, WriteNow is extremely fast.
4 Software / MacX for X session over SSH in System 7
June 30, 2008, 19:26
I've been looking everywhere for the MacX software, which allows pre-OS X Macs to run an X session over SSH from a Linux/Unix box.

I've been using MacSSH, which works great for a console session, but I'd really like to see how well I can do X in System 7.6.1.

I could be wrong, but I believe the newest version of MacX for System 7 is MacX 2.0. Older versions include 1.2 and 1.5.

As I say, I've been looking for MacX for awhile but have had no luck.
5 Hardware / AppleTalk ... Appleshare ...

When you go into Chooser to select a network, is that Appletalk or Appleshare or ???
6 Software / Would be nice to have a utility for this purpose

Something like iStumbler that would help sniff out the Wi-Fi networks ... but which works under 7.6.1.
7 Hardware / $60 for all that?

Sounds pretty good to me -- especially the G3 upgrade, which aren't cheap.

For those worried about swapping processors or memory, it's very, very easy -- the instructions that come with the Apple manuals are very good and very complete -- you can get them online as PDFs (that's how I did it). Everything plugs in and is meant to be swapped out. Adding memory to my 1400cs was one of the smoothest things I've ever done with any piece of hardware.

As I posted in another thread, I just took the 1400 wireless, and I'm pretty happy about it. I need to pop the top again and look at my SCSI connector. SCSI has never worked in this PB, and I'm praying for something like a cold solder joint, but I can see swapping out logic boards if it comes to that. (Follow my Powerbook rehab journey at http://thisoldmac.blogspot.com, where I continue to praise Dan for all the help that this site has given me).
8 Hardware / Appletalk and Orinoco card
December 10, 2006, 01:53
I'm not sure whether or not the Appletalk settings matter for connecting the Orinoco card to a wireless router, but I've had it on both Ethernet Slot O and Remote, and it seems to work either way.
9 Hardware / Got the Orinoco Silver card working
December 10, 2006, 01:44
After stalking the wild Orinoco/WaveLan card over eBay, I finally "won" one for $15.50, and it came within the week. I'm running 7.6.1 with Open Transport 1.1.2 on a Powerbook 1400cs 117, and the software from here loaded up great. All I had to do was figure out the settings, which took an hour or so, and I was off and running with Wi-Fi.

Settings in the TCP/IP control panel are:

Connect via: Ethernet Slot 0
Configure: Using DHCP Server

In the WaveLan Setup control panel: WaveLan Network Name: Any

I haven't tried the 64-bit encryption, or a specific network name yet, and I am pretty shaky on "flashing" the Silver card to Gold status (and 128-bit encryption)

So far the connect is way more solid than with the Fry's brand 802.11g card on my Pentium II MMX 333Mhz. I'll have to compare to the iBook G4 with Airport Express ... but so far connection is good and speeds are as expected.
