1 Software / Re: Doing graphics for software like in the 80's ?

If you want that 1-bit look like in Deja Vu, you're going to want to play around in SuperPaint. That's the only application I remember that had all the different dithering brushes as pre-sets.
2 Hardware / Re: Wireless in OS 9

I just got my iMac G4 connected to my home network using a basic Airport card (my model doesn't support the Extreme card), and to do this I had to get a vintage router that was capable of setting up 802.11b signal at 2.4Ghz, with WEP security. Anything other than that and the Airport card couldn't connect. With the wrong signal or frequency it simply couldn't see the network, and with the wrong security it said that it didn't understand the protocol I was connecting to.
3 Hardware / Re: Macintosh SE - Both Floppy Drives Dead

I've been learning a lot about these old Floppy drives since I acquired a few Mac SE's a year or so ago. Seems they tend to suffer from the same Capacitor problems that the logic boards did, and so often they need to be re-capped. After that, the most common problem with ejecting is the so-called 'Cheese Gear', a small gear in the eject mechanism that was made with a kind of plastic that has proven to deteriorate quickly. Modern replacements are available pretty cheap. And finally just disassembling the drive and giving it a good clean can improve performance quite a bit as well. I'm in the process of reviving a stack of these floppies myself, and those are the general areas I've learned to look out for.

Hey, all, I'm Indigo K, a long-time Mac-using graphic designer. Just recently started collecting old Mac all-in-ones like I used to use for fun and work, and so getting back up-to-speed on all things MacOS 7 and 9.

Current vintage computers include a MacSE and a PowerBook 160 running disk images off of a PiSCSI, and an iMac G4 running OS 9. I'm working on setting up a Hotline server with collections of files aimed at customizing the user experience of MacOS 8 & 9, so lots of icons and Kaleidoscope stuff.

Anyway, happy to find this place and looking forward to rejoining the Old Internet!
