1 Hardware / Re: Working System 7 Macs - to recap or not?

The hard part to me is knowing which caps to get to replace them and where they go.
With the assistance of a buddy, I recently replaced a cap in an Apple 2 power supply.  Overall, it was a fairly easy process.

In terms of finding a replacement, he had a bin of miscellaneous capacitors.  We just found one that had the same rating and pin spacing.

In terms of finding bad ones, mine had an obvious bulge on the top.  But you could also test the capacitor using a multi meter.

When I recently got into collecting old computers, I noticed that the first thing people mentioned doing was to recap their entire computer.  I asked two different EE buddies (my background is CS) about this, and both said that if a visual inspection of the caps looked fine and that if the voltage was within tolerance for each rail, there wasn't a need to recap.

One of my buddies said it never hurts to reap, but doing so would take the "fun" out of the project and prevent any real learning about electronics. Obviously, most EEs get a kick from playing with old electronics, but that may not be the case for you.
3 Operating System / Re: Mac OS 8.0/8.1

As a newcomer to classic mac computing, I find value in this discussion.  It looks like 8.1 can be run on the beige G3.  Might the speed improvements offered by the G3 help offset the slight performance penalty of 8.1 vs 7.6?

I'm mostly coming from the Windows world.  Based on my reading of this discussion, it appears as though the 7.6 / 8.1 discussion looks very similar to the Windows 98 vs Me discussion.  Most believe that 98 is the "purest" version of Win9x and that all Me did was to add bloat and remove support for running older software.  Does that ring true for 7.6/8.1?

Bolkonskij, thanks for the reply.  I guess I'll start looking out for a 604 PPC machine!

Thanks for the reply!  To clarify a bit, I have the last G4 MDD that officially supported OS9.  Would there be a significant advantage to getting a G3 to run OS7/8?

Regarding 68k Macs: I thought there was a lot of legacy 68k-only apps.  My thought was that it might be worth getting a 68k Mac for that purpose.  I suppose it could all be done in emulation but real hardware is so much more fun :)

With many of former developers and engineers pushing towards pension I do hope a few will want to return to the days when computing was exciting and fun and start hobbyist projects. Both in hardware and software. It's a huge playground and not too many kids playing there, so every project will receive the due attention. :-)

I think this is already happening to some extent.  As an early-middle age software developer, the modern tech scene's focus on minimizing risk and maximizing profits (completely understandable) has made tech a whole lot less fun for those like me who are more interested in tinkering over money making.

The 8-bit scene is already incredibly vibrant.  I've bought several toys for my Apple 2e and gs machines (floppy emulator, HDMI video, ethernet, CPU acceleator, etc.), which has really rekindled my interest in that era of computing.   I'm really looking forward to the release of the Commander X16 and others like it that lower the barrier to getting into retro hardware.

There is noticeably a lot less classic Mac stuff.  Other than the SCSI2SD project, I’m not aware of any new toys that can be plugged into an old mac.  I think this is in part because Macs are vastly more complex and there is more secrecy around the hardware (the complete Apple 2 hardware spec is available online).  Hopefully that changes as I would love to add an ethernet adapter to my SE/30.
7 Operating System / PPC vs 68k on System 7
June 06, 2021, 22:50
Greetings all,

I'm considering the value in obtaining an early G3 to run System 7.  Is there anything that such a machine would offer over a late model G4 running OS9?  Based on very superficial testing, it seems as though most (all?) System 7 programs that are written for System 7 / PPC also run in OS9.

Would it instead be more beneficial from a completeness perspective for me to obtain a 68K Mac to gain access to all of the 68k-only software? I already have an SE/30 but I would like to get something that supports color, an  external LCD panell, and is easier to connect to an Ethernet network.

Thanks!
Adam
