1 Operating System / Connecting to the internet

Maybe this has something to do with it.  While trying to run the Asante driver software I keep getting this message:

The file "Network" on disk "Macintosh HD" cannot be replaced by the Installer.  No installation will take place.  Quit the Installer, move the file to another folder and try again.

After searching for "Network" there isn't a single file on my hard drive called that.  Anybody have any suggestions?

My two options in the "Conecti Via" drop down box are "Ethernet" and "AppleTalk (Mac IP)"

Actually nothing is coming up and my router isn't lit up for the slot I have it plugged into.  The light on the internal modem blinks though.  Does that most likely mean I have a driver problem first?

After a couple hours of getting nowhere I'm finally admitting defeat.  I bought an Asante Ethernet card for my LC III today and no matter what I try I can't get the damn thing connected to the internet.  Instead of trying to explain everything I tried and no doubt embarrassing myself, does anybody have an easy step-by-step way of connecting to the internet?  It's just plugged into the back of a regular Netgear router.  Thanks ahead of time.

I've been toying around with the Presto Plus idea myself for quite some time.  While it'd be neat, I'm still having a hard time justifying a $100 purchase for my $5 LC III.  On the other hand I can totally see myself caving in just because I think it'd be fun to deck out my machine as much as possible.  If you have the money I say go for it.

Perhaps we should all chip in and buy them some old Macs running 7.6.1.  If we all chip in, like, $3 we can make this happen.

Surprisingly step 1 didn't work for me, but rebuilding the desktop did.  Thanks a bunch!
8 Operating System / Program icons

Every time I transfer a program from my iMac to my LC III via floppy, the program's icon reverts to the standard application icon of the diamond with a hand drawing over it.  Is there a reason this happens?  For whatever reason the original icon still shows up in the upper right corner when the application is running.  The icons show up just as the should on my iMac before they're copied to disk.  Oh, and I'm using 7.5.5 if that changes anything.  Thanks!

Wow, awesome link.  Just so happens I need a new battery too.  Thanks!

Does anybody here have an extra 32mb stick of 72 pin RAM they want to get rid of?  I'm looking to pop one in my LC III and thought I'd post an offer to buy one here to help out a fellow System 7 user instead of some random dude off eBay.

I just yanked out a working 128mb stick of PC100 RAM from my 600mhz iMac if you want to trade for it as well.
12 Operating System / How to - OS 7.1 to 7.5.5 with no optical drive
October 23, 2006, 00:59
I made this little how to for my blog and thought I'd share it with anybody who ran into the same problem I did.  I wanted to upgrade my LC III to 7.5.5, but my only means of transporting data was via floppies.  I'm also new (again) to System 7 and wasn't aware of some of the utilities that I'd need to perform this task.  Hopefully this is helpful for somebody.

While it’s not the most horrible task in the world, upgrading to 7.5.5 with no optical drive is kind of a pain in the butt. Because I have no other Macs old enough to have a disk drive built in, here’s how I did it with my iMac G3.

What you’ll need:
-A Mac with an internet connection and a USB port
-1 USB floppy drive
-2 1.44MB floppies
-OS 7.5.3
-OS 7.5.5 Upgrade
-Aladdin Expander 5.5
-DiskCopy

The first step is to download all 19 OS 7.5.3 disk images from Apple. Once you get them on your computer then here’s the fun part. Using your USB disk drive, place one image at a time onto a floppy and then load that data onto your non-optical drive Mac. I set up a 2 disk system where one disk was always having a new image loading on it while the other was installing one on my LC III. This is also a great time to move over Aladdin and DiskCopy.

Before you do anything with the actual OS images, go ahead and install both Aladdin and DiskCopy. You’re going to need these programs later.

Once those 19 are on your classic Mac’s hard drive, you’re going to need to decompress them with Aladdin Expander. When all 19 are decompressed you can delete the original images to save hard drive space.

You’ll notice the first image has a different icon than the rest. Double click on that icon and from there the install process will take over. The whole process lasted like 30 minutes or so on my LC III with 8MB of RAM. It may have been longer, but that’s just coming from my gut.

Once you’ve got your 7.5.3 install up and running, go ahead and transfer over the 7.5.5 update files you downloaded earlier. Double click on the install icon and a process very similar to the last install process will start. After a few minutes you’ve got yourself a squeaky clean OS 7.5.5 install!

This entire process could have taken a whole lot less time had I spent a few bucks and bought an SCSI CD-ROM drive, but hey, that’d be too easy.

Legality aside, demyan just totally made my day by providing that link to Mac Garden.  This may sound stupid, but the initial reason I decided to buy my LC III was to play Oregon Trail and now I can.  Maybe I wasn't looking in the right places, but I couldn't find a legal way to obtain a copy anywhere.
14 Hardware / Disk formatting question
October 18, 2006, 08:29
Just thought I'd post and update to let everybody know I solved the problem.  Apparently the disks I had were just old and crappy.  I picked up a brand new box of disks today and everything worked flawlessly.  Now I'm sporting a fresh 7.5.5 install.
15 Hardware / Disk formatting question
October 10, 2006, 03:41
That's actually what I'm trying.  I want the data to eventually go on the LC III, so I'm trying to format the disk on that machine.  I don't even know how to format a disk through OSX, but if anybody here does then that might help me out.  It's not the biggest deal if I can't upgrade the thing right now, but my inner nerd doesn't want to admit defeat yet =)
