I boot 7.5.5 in my PM9500 with a G4 upgrade card, which I believe is a Sonnet Crescendo 700 G4.

Any chance you'd let someone else take on the task of running the site?

I tend to agree with OvalKing... InfoMac is both ugly AND slow.

Thanks for the site.

Aside from security concerns, I would prefer to leave S7T running as-is. How much maintenance does it take to run this?

Are you planning to migrate the content over to InfoMac or just let it archive itself here?

10 Hardware / which powerbook for System 7 ?
May 19, 2016, 09:00
Because of the CardBus aspect, it looks like a 3400 is what you're looking for, with a minimum of 7.6.1. The higher-end models even already include ethernet.
11 Hardware / which powerbook for System 7 ?

Well, I found some more details at http://lowendmac.com/misc/990927.shtml but not sure if these count for 'native' USB support.

It would seem that the best bet is the 1400 with one of these USB cards in one of the 1400's PCCard slots. At least you'd be able to run 7, 8, and 9 on the same laptop, and have another PCCard slot available, probably for ethernet or airport-like card.

Are there any PC Cards that have native support in 8.6? I know there are USB2 PC Cards which have native support in OS X, but OS 9 and lower only support USB1.1 at most.
13 Hardware / Power Mac 6500 Upgrades

I'd suggest adding an ethernet card, either:

"10base-T, Comm Slot II Twisted-Pair Ethernet Card"
Apple part# 661-1171
Assembly#: 630-1873
Board#: 820-0784-A, 05-3402B-815-1581

Or a PCI gigabit card based on the Realtek 8169 such as the Trendnet TEG-PCITXR.

The other option is to get one of the Solectron 1394 PCILynx firewire cards.

But since the 6500 only has 2 PCI slots, I'd recommend going with the ComSlotII NIC, leaving the 2 PCI slots for the Radeon 7000 and the OrangePC cards.
14 Hardware / PCI gigabit Ethernet cards....

So after some searching, I found that the $10 Trendnet TEG-PCITXR gigabit PCI adapter uses the Realtek 8169 chip. I put this in my Power Macintosh 9500 along with the previously-mentioned driver and it works great!

I'm writing this post from iCab 2.9.9 with the 9500 connected to the internet through the Trendnet NIC.

I'm not sure what network benchmark utilities exist for System 7, but I was able to download a 1GB file from my home server using iCab in about 10 minutes, which is a heck of a lot faster than the ~1 hour it took with the built-in 10Mb/s connection!
15 Hardware / Help with Radeon 7000

I recommend upgrading the Radeon 7000 ROM to 2.26 in the August 2005 ROM update which you can find at http://applemacanix.com/drivers.htm

http://gona.mactar.hu/ATI_Mac/ has a lot more information about ATI graphics with Macs.
