Well, I found some more details at http://lowendmac.com/misc/990927.shtml but not sure if these count for 'native' USB support.

It would seem that the best bet is the 1400 with one of these USB cards in one of the 1400's PCCard slots. At least you'd be able to run 7, 8, and 9 on the same laptop, and have another PCCard slot available, probably for ethernet or airport-like card.

Nope, no USB on 1400 since it is 16-bit PCMCIA. USB cards require 32-bit.

2400c's can be modded to be 32-bit, and I believe 3400c's are 32-bit.

I say forget USB and go with CF cards with a PCMCIA adapter for mass storage if that's why you need USB.
2 Operating System / How to create BOOTABLE customized CD

Thanks for the tips, everyone.

Looks like its almost impossible to make a customized 7.6.1 boot CD.

The issues is with the CD not being able to boot. I can install off that CD if the machine is booted using a different startup disc. Anyways, thanks for the link, I'll have a try with that.

Having a look at the PDF, that's what I've been doing. The method seems to work when creating a 9.x bootable CD, but not for 7.6.1.

You do not say where you are running into problems. Is the disk you are making not bootable, or does the disk boot, but not install.

5 Operating System / How to create BOOTABLE customized CD

Hi all,

I think this is my second post or something like that.

I'd like to put together a customized 7.6.1 CD that has the System Software Installer, Patched versions of Disk Tools (so that I can format non-Apple HDD's), Software Installers of the stuff listed here in the Software Guide, etc.

I have all the components and Toast 5.2.3 (IIRC) on a Pismo (9.2.2) that has a burner. I know toast 5.2.3 has the option to "make disk bootable" and was successful in making customized OS 9 boot CD's out of this setup, but that didn't work with 7.6.1.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

6 New Member Welcome / It's official: Mac OS 7.6.1 cannot be used as an email machi

Well, I tried Outlook 5.0.6, my last hope. It asked for Mac OS 8.1 the minute I launched it. Therefore, I can confirm that there is no working email client for Mac OS 7.6.1. For me, that's the end of the road for Mac 7.6.1. I'm going to 8.1.

Well, I found this page (http://www.applefool.com/se30/) while doing some research. Looks like there is no real way to use email clients on 7.6.1. I know Outlook 5.0.6 works since that's what I've been using on 9.1, but "officially" the lowest it can go is 8.1.

I'm gonna try "forcing" Outlook 5.0.6 on 7.6.1 and see how that goes. After all, Netscape 4.8 wasn't supposed to work on 7.6.1, right?

I downloaded Eudora 4.3.3 but that also didn't work with email servers that require SSL.

This isn't fun :(

Hi all,

I've been watching this site for a while, but I didn't really get active since I was on OS 9.1 on my vintage macs. (TAM, PB 2400c, PB 1400cs)

While I will always stay at 9.1 for the TAM (to use iTunes), I thought about going back to System 7.6.1 on the PowerBooks since 9.1 was plain slow without much added functionalities compared to 7.6.1.

Well, today I finally pulled the trigger on the 1400cs. I formatted the HDD and installed 7.6.1 along with all the stuff recommended on this site. One word to explain the results: AWESOME! I can't believe how flawless this site works on a near 20-year-old machine!

Since the 1400cs has such a nice keyboard, I use it as a "brainstorming machine" where I would jot down ideas and email it over to my Evernote account, which will then be worked on a modern Mac. However, I can't set up my email account right on Netscape 4.8. I think it has to do with port numbers which on 9.1 were manually configured in Outlook, but that Netscape 4.8 doesn't allow such manual settings.

So, long question short: What is the best email client for 7.6.1? Sadly, Netscape 4.8 doesn't work for me.
