1 Hardware / LCII mouse and keyboard issue
July 05, 2014, 17:16
Do you have a different mouse, keyboard and ADB cable you can try? If it still doesn't work then like I said, my guess is its the capacitors. The capacitors in most classic Macs are starting to reach the end of their useful life, and this can make the machine do strange things, or cause it to fail to boot up at all. If you are comfortable with soldering, you can buy new capacitors, unsolder the capacitors and solder new ones on. If not, you can send the board to someone like maccaps.com and get them to do it for you.

I'm thinking it might be the caps....

Another idea - is there a chance that this machine may not have been repaired during the big Performa recall back in the 90's? Back in the day a lot of Performas shipped with buggy ROMs which caused a few issues, and I seem to recall that one of the symptoms of the buggy Performa ROMs was freezing. It might not be a bad idea to run the 5xxx/6xxx tester (on any Mac OS CD from 7.6 onwards) just in case.

Thanks :) Though sadly it wasn't an original DOS Comaptible - about 12 months after I got it (in 2002) I got my hands on an LC630 DOS logic board complete with the DOS card and shoved it in :) Great machine though, maxed out with 132MB of RAM on the Mac side, 32MB of RAM on the PC side, a 40GB HDD, AppleCD 1200i, Apple Video System and CommSlot Ethernet card. If only it had decent onboard video (decent enough to drive a screen at 800x600 in 16 bit colour) it would really be the perfect machine.

Disk Copy allows you to make an image of an entire disk, I've been doing this to make images of my machines for years.

Thanks for replies.

I might get one of those commslot cards from welovemacs.com, unless I can track something down in Denmark or Europe.

Is there any difference in performance from a commslot card to an LC PDS card?

Main reason to go for a CommSlot card rather than an LC PDS card would be to use your PDS slot for something else, such as a PAS 16 sound card, PDS graphics card, or video capture card. But given that all these are rather hard to find, not to mention that you may not need/want them anyway, 9 times out of 10 you may as well just use a PDS card.
