I had the same issue with my 540C. The ribbon unplug trick worked for me.

Good luck...I love the 540c Powerbook!

The web experience as others have stated does suck compared to a more current OS.

But I've had no problems with either IE 5, Netscapes 3 and 5.

I've Followed the advice here at System 7 Today and installed all the available updates. I have really been  impressed at the speed once the browsers load. IE5 loads much quicker than Netscape but both load pages quickly. I've downloaded and installed drivers and updates from several websites and so far no problems. On Netscape 3.0.1 I had to turn off java but it's really quick on my 3400C powerbook.
I do most of my web surfing on sites with minimal graphics. I turn off alot of the eye candy even on our faster and newer Macs on our home network.

On more thing: I almost cried when I installed Sound Jam free. It brought back some great memories from when I first started building my first music libraries. I wish iTunes was so simple!

5 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?

Running 7.6.1 on my Powerbook 2400c and on a 2300 Duo Powerbook. Very pleased with both installs.
6 Hardware / Had some love with the G3 Sonnet CPU

I bought a 8100/80 on eBay for $59.00 and spent the $$$ for the Sonnet G3 nubus upgrade and the video adapter card, (I had bought that from eBay for $5.00 with max video ram).

With 7.6.1 installed I must say I was VERY pleased with the speed of this machine. I broke out all of my OS7 programs and games and they now have new life!!! The problem I now have is some games actually run too fast!!! I'll have to get online and look for G3 patches.

If anyone knows a good place to get game patches and upgrades please let me know. Maybe on a torrent site maybe?

Thoughts....

Hi All!
Just your typical Family Guy, Wife and 3 Girls (teenagers). I recently got into Classic Macs as a hobby. I just love the old machines. There is something about those early 90's Macs that I really like.

I discovered System 7 Today this past week. What a terrific resource! Our family just re-entered the Macintosh universe last year after about 10 years of Windoze. Before that we had Macs in the following order Quadra 605, 7100/80, 7300/180, then a Sonnet CPU upgrade for the 7300/180. When we came back the Apple I went behind the technology curve a little bought a Quad Core G5 Tower, Powerbook G4 11", and 2 G4 iBooks all on eBay and payed less then $900.00 for all of them!

This week I purchased a 7100/80 and 8500/150 on ebay. I'm going to put OS 7.6.1 on them both and see what happens. I'm sure I will have tons of questions. :)
