1 Development / Additional info

I should state, for the record, that I owned System 7.6, and had the 7.6.1 update installed on my Quadra 605. I am merely trying to get something as close to the system I had back again, even if it is emulated.

I never owned CodeWarrior. Programming software is very expensive, and I could not afford it then any more than I can now. However, I did own FutureBasic and FutureBasic2. I love that language. I lost much more than a Mac and software and games. Rebuilding has not been easy.

I find it discouraging when I cannot find the software I need. It's bad enough it isn't supported anymore. No longer being offered means no longer in existence.

Obsolete software that no one cares about anymore should be free for the taking, just to preserve it as long as possible. Instead, the attitude seems to be "if we don't see money in it, you can't have it either". Wrong attitude, if you ask me.

I notice that this thread has not been posted in since 2009. I found it in my search for anything related to CodeWarrior 5.0.

Everywhere I look I cannot find a copy of it anywhere. It is no longer sold or supported. Also, 6.0 requires System 7.6 or newer. System 7.5.5 will not work. This all according to all of the searching I have done.

I have the source code to my favorite Mac game, Wolfenstein 3D. Bill Heineman released the source to 2nd Encounter back in 2000. I have yet to locate a copy of that, but Greg Ewing (author of WolfEdit 2.0.4) modified the 2nd Encounter source and renamed the modified version 4th Encounter. The difference is just that it allows Wolfenstein 3D to open level files created with WolfEdit.

To compile it, I have to have CodeWarrior 5.0. That is the version that Bill Heineman compiled the game with, and I am running System 7.5.5 in the Basilisk II emulator. I haven't possessed my Quadra 605 in almost a decade, and I can't get 7.6 from Apple. Why they released the 7.6.1 update, but not 7.6, is beyond me. That OS hasn't been supported in a longer time than I lost my Quadra. Oh well, cry over spilt milk.

Anyway, since this version of CodeWarrior is all but non-existent anymore, and I'm certain that FreeScale isn't going to worry about something they no longer sell or support, is there anyone here that has it, that will be willing to part with a copy? After all, it's not like I can just go buy it at Fry's.
3 Software / text+styl conversion

TexEdit and TexEdit Plus are replacements for SimpleText that work very well. They are both still available and work very well with 7.6. I have not used them in sometime so I am not sure what options they have for saving. I do believe that one can do copy and paste from the TexEdit application and it does preserve the format.

I have both. I used to use them when I had my old Quadra 605. The one thing they never did was allow me to save in rtf format. Tex-Edit Plus allows me to save in many formats, but the color information gets lost. Some formats will preserve the styles (bold, underline, italic, etc.), but not the color.

OpenDoc which also runs on OS 7.6, used rtf for its text formats and some of its applications could open SimpleText files. BBEdit also had versions of its software from that time frame that could open SimpleText files, but again I do not know what formats it could "save as".

I have BBEdit Lite 3.5.1 (couldn't find a copy of v4.6). It won't import any of the style information.

If you have access to an OS X machine you might want to see what TextEdit from OS X does with SimpleText files. In a similar vein an editor called "WorldText" was distributed with OS 9.1. It can open SimpleText files and save rtf files.

Unfortunately, I don't. There must be some way to convert a text file with a styl resource to formatted text. I just can't find it. I could manually add all the style information back into the document with BBEdit, but that's alot of work when the files already exist with the style information in them. :(
4 Software / text+styl conversion

I have been searching in vain for a utility that will take a SimpleText file that has a styl resource (containing style and color info) and convert it to rtf format for export to my PC.

I downloaded the WordPerfect installer from this site. I know it saves in rtf format, but it won't translate the styl info when I open the file. Also, there seems to be no text color in WordPerfect. It's under graphics, and seems to have no effect on text. Trying to use the converters does no good either.

Help?
5 New Member Welcome / Returning to System 7

Hi,

I am returning to System 7.5.5 after many years. I am running it in the Basilisk II emulator. I am having a few problems with it, but am working towards getting it to work right.

For the most part it does work. Here I am hoping to locate software, or help with software.
