Off Topic Discussion / Upgrades
December 13, 2009, 17:27 |
Hi, recently I spend quite a lot of time tampering with my old macs and discovering how useful they still are. I work with various operating systems due to the requirements of my job, and in case of various flavors of Windows I share the common feeling that there is really no demand for new OSes like Vista or 7. If MS supported XP in terms of security patches and ability to use new hardware (more RAM, more CPUs) very few desktop users would need something more than XP. What is the case with MacOS X? Is Classic going extinct, because it is flawed somehow, or because Apple wants it to die? |

Off Topic Discussion / a new HDD for G3 Beige
December 12, 2009, 23:41 |
Hello, I recently discovered that my G3 has an IDE (ATA) HDD instead of SCSI (which is the case in my Powermac 9500/200). Can I put another, bigger IDE HDD instead of the original 4 GB? What is the max size supported by MacOS Classic? greetings |

Hardware / concerning the 3.
December 12, 2009, 23:06 |
hmm, actually I'd like to have the old video card staying in the system. I'd like to have in my G3 two video cards in order to have two displays attached. Is it going to work? |

Hardware / Moving a PCI video card between 2 macs
December 06, 2009, 23:22 |
Hello again, I've got a hardware-related question. Is it possible to take a PCI video card from one mac (9500/200) and to put it in another one (like G3 or G4)? The video card in question has a VGA output, so it can connect a mac to a regular TFT display. Will it ble.. I mean work? z. |

Operating System / Classilla on MacOS 7.6.1?
December 02, 2009, 18:37 |
...is there a version of Classilla for 7.6.1 ? I've read that Classilla runs on MacOS 9 only and with some issues on MacOS 8.6. That would be great if I could use Classilla on my MacOS 7.6.1. z. |

Operating System / HFS CD
December 02, 2009, 16:00 |
Hello again, Answer to #1 Mac OS 7.6 uses HFS filesystem (for CDs too). "The Linux utility mkisofs (from the cdrtools package) has options to create HFS CDs. The easiest way to master your CD begins with putting all the files into a directory. The command "mkisofs -hfs -magic -o mac_cd.iso directory" will create an HFS CD image in mac_cd.iso. Then you can burn the .iso file in the standard way. Read "man mkisofs" for more information on the many advanced options." http://lowendmac.com/sable/07/0315.html I'm I the only linux user here? ![]() z. |

Operating System / CD with essentials
December 02, 2009, 10:42 |
Hello again, Since yesterday I'm a happy user of Mac OS 7.6.1 ![]() I was thinking about creating a CD with essentials for my Powermac. Why? Because it seems to be the best way to transfer lots of goodies from this website to my Mac. My other computer runs Ubuntu and has no floppy, Powermac has no USB. The only common denominator is a sloooooow LAN, and to use FTP I have to get somehow Transmit from the internet to my Mac. And my Mac can access recordable CDs (but probably no rewritables). So, there are 700 MiB available and I have still two issues to solve: 1. If I record a regular iso9660 CD from the *.sit downloads stored on my Ubuntu, would my Mac be able to read it? Or is there a special tricky hierarchic no-pc-allowed mac CD format? (hint: there is no windows/dos involved in the net-to-cd process) 2. What are in your opinion must-have software I should get my hands on (freeware or ebayware)? I was thinking about: * FTP client (to get from Mac to Ubuntu) * VNC server (to get from Ubuntu to Mac) * Netscape (to get from Mac to Internet via LAN) Anything else advisable? Thanks in advance for your advice. z. |

Hardware / HDD is out of suspicion
December 01, 2009, 14:20 |
Hi, the sound/noise of the HDD can be distinguished, it is very unique and I don't mind it. The nuisance must be a kind of fan which turns consistently. I suspect the power unit with old fan... z. |

New Member Welcome / Hello
December 01, 2009, 11:18 |
Hello everybody, I'm a ITSec guy from Berlin and my adventure with Macs has just begun. I used DOS and Windows from the very beginning and I was relatively happy with XP. Recently, when the RC of Windows 7 has been announced, I decided that I spend anyway too much time with system support (updates, firewall, antivirus, registry cleaning) and that it's time to change. So I got rid of Windows and installed Ubuntu Jaunty. Jaunty had its limitations and when Ubuntu Karmic was available I upgraded the OS. When I was using Ubuntu I stumbled upon Sheepshaver. I like the emulator, but I decided that I'd like to try a real Mac. I bought a working Powermac 9500/200 for 1 Euro and it's fun to play with it. So, I'm happy with every piece of advice I find in this forum. z. |

Hardware / Getting 9500/200 silent
December 01, 2009, 10:19 |
Hello everybody, recently I bought an old Powermac 9500/200. It's alot of fun to play with it and it's worth every Euro I paid for it. This Mac has a nice feature - its video card comes in PCI flavor and has a VGA connector, so it's possible to change the original monitor which could be used as a killing weapon if dropped from a window, to a nice flat screen LCD. This Powermac has unfortunately one limitation. It's loud like a vacuum cleaner. Is there a possibility to make it less loud? Is it possible to clean/oil it's fans, so they remain silent? If yes - which elements must get cleaned? Or maybe some parts should be exchanged? Thanks in advance for your advice. z. |
