1 Software / Word 5.1a and 7.6.1
October 14, 2009, 12:12
That's what I was adjusting. I tried it higher and lower than the recommended size of 1000KB. No luck either way. I've got Speed Doubler 8 and LibMoto installed. I need to try it again!
2 Software / Word 5.1a and 7.6.1

I looked all around and couldn't find this one anywhere. Does anybody know about running Word 5.1a on System 7.6.1? It's the PowerPC OS on a Powerbook 3400. Whenever I try to start Word, it says that it's out of memory. Word's recommended size is 1MB. The largest unused block is 98MB (with VM turned on).

The Powerbook has 48MB of physical RAM and I've got 112MB of virtual memory. I've tried adjusting Word's memory up and down, tried running with VM off, and all of it to no avail! It ran on 8.6, so this is a bit odd.

I'm going to try it again with SpeedDoubler and LibMoto to see if that helps. Maybe it will! :D
3 Hardware / Color Classic startup problem
October 13, 2009, 19:57
I had to do that once. One thing you should do is install DiskWarrior on the box you're going to do the testing with. It's not available to buy anymore, but it can be found at the Macintosh Garden.

(If abandonware mentions aren't allowed, please edit accordingly)

It'll let you thoroughly test the disk and its structure. Usually this kind of problem is caused by either a dead drive, or a corrputed b-tree. The b-tree is like a database that lets the System Software find files on your disk. This is the #1 cause of HDs becoming unreadable!

DiskWarrior's saved a bunch of my old disks that I thought were toast.
4 Hardware / Widescreen resolutions on a 6500?
October 13, 2009, 19:48
I had a dead blue G3 and took out its video card, the stock 8MB Rage 128 PCI and tried it out in my 6500/250. It worked flawlessly but didn't give any extra speedup over my beautiful old 3DFX Voodoo 2 card which works with 7.

But here's the reason I tried it! I own a widescreen LCD display and I'd like to get the 6500 plugged into it... but it won't do widescreen resolutions :(

This means I can't drive the screen at its native 1440x900! Augh! 9.2.2 on my G4 runs it flawlessly

I'm running 9.0.4 on the 6500 right now. This doesn't work with 8.6 either. Are there any methods/tips/hacks to make the classic OS run at seemingly "non-standard" resolutions? I'm totally not afraid to dig in with ResEdit!

... For me anyway.

I'm a dyed in the wool geek girl. I've always loved my tech, but lately not as much. This new generation of web-everything is so incredibly bland. Nothing about it excites me. I was a teenager through the mid and late 1990s so I remember the OS wars between Windows 95 and System 7. I remember drooling over the Quadra 840av at Computer City.

I remember having to act happy when my parents gave me a Compaq Presario with Windows 95 instead of the nice Power Mac I wanted :(

Woe was me. I finally got into Macs in college but couldn't chase the Apple upgrade-o-rama. I just never made enough money to be a Mac user. Fortunately I had everything I needed to be happy. I got sick of it all about two months ago and decided to give away my dual 3GHz thing. So now I use my old 500MHz Sawtooth G4 with 9.2.2 as my main computer, an iMac 500 with 9.2.2 in the kitchen for my housemate, a Powerbook 3400 with 8.5.1 and 7.6.1 and my 6500 with 7.5.5. A blue G3 with 8.6 sits around as my backup for both the iMac and the G4.

I'm in heaven now that I use Word 5.1 instead of Google Docs :p
