Off Topic Discussion / Classilla 9.1 released
March 05, 2010, 18:14 |
I wonder what you... er... I mean the creator would think of someone running Classilla on a 1400/166 with only 16mb of real RAM installed. Virtual memory being set to 100mb and all... |

Operating System / OS-7.5.5 or 7.6.1 vs. 8.6 (on a 8600)
March 02, 2010, 16:14 |
Dan's right. The period where 68K machines were speedier than PPC ones in running 68K code was a very short one. (Think 40MHz '040 machines beating 66MHz 601PPCs with 68K optimised code.) By shear MHz, that 8600 should run your old programs much faster than you used to on the IIci, regardless of which OS. As for which OS to use, if the 8600 has 64mb of RAM or more, I would go with 8.6 if it were me. Less than 64mb, I would stick with 7.6 for bloat reasons... |

Software / Netscape 4.8 Edit about:config - Ureka
February 08, 2010, 21:35 |
Well, I went ahead and used BBEdit Lite to create the user.js file, and I too had success. And, wow, what a difference. I may do some tinkering with more settings if I can ever wrangle the ellusive "free time" that I hear other people sometimes reference.

Lichen Software, Can the user.js file be created using simple text, or do I need to hunt down a copy of bbedit? |

Software / Classilla 9.1 is coming
February 02, 2010, 16:52 |
Very cool. I played around with the current release on my B&W G3 (via classic under 10.2) and found it to be quite an improvement over the existing crop of classic browsers. Now I just gotta get my PowerBook 1400 up to 8.6 so I can start using Classilla daily. (Stuck at 8.5.1 until I scrounge up RAM to get to 24MB )

Hardware / Powerbook 1400 factory RAM module
February 01, 2010, 21:06 |
Alright. Answering my own question, by looking at the motherboard picture on this site, the answer is obviouse to me now. The factory card cannot be used in the user slot because the factory card has the male version of the connector on the bottom while the user installable modules have the female version of the connector. They also have the male connector on them, but it is there to receive the second user module. |

Off Topic Discussion / Virtual PC 2.1.2 update?
February 01, 2010, 12:08 |
Congrats on finding the update you were looking for. A little more info on the 3D acceleration, it's VooDoo 2 cards only. Virtual PC can only access 1 PCI slot at a time, so unfortunately you can't throw 2 cards in there in SLI mode. A company called Quantum 3D did make a card called the Obsidian2 X-24, which was 2 VooDoo 2s in SLI on a single board, but I have no idea if that would work with virtual PC. (I have always wanted to try that though! *Edited by moderator 2/1/10 to fix brackets on URL. |

That's page 40 as shown on the guide pages, but page 54 of the PDF. Pin assignments start on page 41/55. |

Hardware / Powerbook 1400 factory RAM module
January 30, 2010, 14:19 |
I'm currently fiddling around with my Powerbook 1400. It's got 16MB of RAM factory installed. I also have a sacrificial Powerbook which also has 16MB of factory installed. (For those that don't know that's 8MB soldered on the motherboard and 8MB on a RAM card.) I want to move the 8MB factory card from the sacrificial 1400 to bring the other one up to 24MB of RAM. But will the factory module work in the user upgrade slot? I have confirmed via Apple's developer documentation that the use the exact same 80-pin connector, but some of the pin assignments don't seem to correspond directly. I'm also not sure if the factory module will physically fit in the user slot. Any advice on this? See page 40 of Apple's Developer Documentation. |

Classifieds / Wanted - Working or Dead PB1400 Battery
January 27, 2010, 16:36 |
Looking for a Powerbook 1400 battery. I don't care if it holds 1 hour, 30 seconds, or zero charge at all. I simply want to fill the empty battery bay. I have software and hardware that I could trade. Thanks. |

Hardware / IR on performa 636cd does not work!
July 18, 2008, 05:24 |
DaveRhodes is right. That is simply the TV remote sensor. Go to: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50044 click on the PDF manual for the Perfoma 600 series and go to page 39 of the PDF file (page 31 of the manual) for confirmation. JoAT |

Hardware / PB 1400 in SCSI Disk Mode
July 01, 2008, 21:10 |
Just thought I'd close this thread out for anyone that comes looking for the same information. Looks like I do indeed need a pass-thru terminator to make the 1400 work in SCSI disk mode. The Powerbook will start-up properly (floating diamond displaying the SCSI ID), but the attached Mac can't seems to see it. I tried hooking it up to both a B&W G3 in Mac OS 9 and X (with a Orange Micro Grappler SCSI card) and to a Performa 6360 running 8.6. I had never heard of this restriction before I saw it in the 1400 manual, but apparently if affects all Powerbooks that use IDE hard drives. JoAT |

Hardware / PB 1400 in SCSI Disk Mode
May 10, 2008, 05:36 |
Hi all, I'm about to receive via mail a Powerbook SCSI dock adapter that I'll be using to simplify installs on my Powerbook 1400. The information I read from Apple regarding set-up of the PB for SCSI disk mode notes that a terminator is required between the PB and the host Mac. However, none of the "how-to" articles written by people out on the 'net that I have seen have mentioned this as a requirement. Anybody here have experience with the 1400 in SCSI disk mode? |
