1 Hardware / Re: Radeon 7000 on 9600/350
April 17, 2010, 00:57
Thanks for the hint re: Res Manager.

Traced the flickering/color shifting to a bad VGA cable. I replaced the stock TwinTurbo in the 9600, reset CUDA and PRAM again, and everything seemed to be back to normal.

I installed the Radeon 7000 into my other project machine, an 8600/200. Removed all four VRAM modules, reset CUDA and PRAM, and the card was detected upon initial boot. Installed the S7T drivers and Resolution Manager, and was able to successfully select 1920x1200 @ 60Hz.

Something is wrong with the image. I'm getting wavy lines on the LCD, and the picture lacks sharpness. Auto adjust does not correct the problem; neither does manual adjustment of phase or pixel clock.

Hello S7T members,

I spent some time on this site and forum in late 2006 after acquiring a NIB 9600/350, and always found it to be an indispensable resource. Thanks again to Dan for taking the time to create and maintain something that so many of us find useful.

Things got a bit more hectic in mid-2007, and I re-boxed the 9600 after returning it to a near-stock configuration (except for the installed, matched 512 MB of EDO RAM). This particular machine is truly mint, inside and out, and I knew I'd get around to playing with it again later. I have fond memories of 7.6.1 in its heyday, and remember my disappointment as later versions of the classic Mac OS became slower and more cluttered. Mac OS X is great, and my main production machines run 10.5 and 10.6. Still, nothing equates with stepping back into to the simple, isolated environment of System 7. Aside from the feelings of nostalgia, I truly find it to be an effective way to get some serious work done (of course, a little Wolfenstein here and there doesn't hurt, either).

I recently decided to get the 9600 back on its feet, and ordered a Radeon 7000 from this eBay auction. I booted the machine about a week ago, and checked things out. Everything seemed to be functioning perfectly, just as it was when I boxed it up. The card arrived yesterday. When booting the machine again to install Dan's R7000 drivers (with the TwinTurbo card still installed), I noticed some strange color flickering/color shifting on the LCD connected via a ViewSonic Mac-to-VGA adapter. This was not present upon initial boot a week ago. I went ahead and installed the drivers, installed the R7000, and connected it to a 24" Dell LCD via D-Sub/VGA. (This particular Radeon only has VGA out).

The ATI drivers seemed to recognize the card, and the menu reported graphics acceleration enabled. However, I was not able to select the appropriate display resolution (1920x1200) in the Monitors & Sound control panel. The highest resolution option provided was 1600x1200.

Then, I noticed the same color flickering/color shifting on the Dell monitor! Again, this is using a different graphics card, and a different monitor.

I subsequently reset the PRAM. Now the machine displays no video at all upon startup. It still boots to the Finder as usual; I can verify this by successfully performing a standard shutdown using Power+Return after boot.

I am going to remove the Radeon and try the hardware in my other classic PCI-based Mac, an 8600, tomorrow when I have a little more time to troubleshoot. Thought I'd get this out there in case any of you have experienced similar problems.

Thanks in advance for any input.
3 Software / Packet Capture in Mac OS 7.x
April 02, 2010, 21:57
Does anyone know of a packet capture utility that will run on Mac OS 7.x? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just basic pcap functionality (WireShark, WinPcap, etc.). Haven't had any luck with Google searches.

Thanks, Madison Nye
4 Software / Missing Netscape 4.8 config file?
November 19, 2008, 10:32
Hey Dan,

Hope things are well. I just got 7.6.1 up and running on an 8500/120 that I rescued... It's been tricked out with a 180MHz 604e and a 10k 5GB SCSI drive.

I used your Netscape 4.8 installer. On first launch, it reported that "netscape.cfg" was missing from the Essential Files folder and froze. On subsequent launches, it will launch only if TCP/IP is NOT set to Ethernet/DHCP. Otherwise, it crashes. Deleting prefs starts the whole process over.

I haven't had this problem on my 8600 or 9600 back home, but that was in November 2006 - could have been a different installer? Is this file supposed to be in the install package?

Thanks for your help.

This upgraded Power Macintosh 7600 would be a beast running 7.6.1, and I doubt it will sell for much. I've been spending way too much money on old Macs lately so I thought I'd bring it to the attention of the S7T prospectors. :)

My first Power Mac ever was a 7600/132, back in 1996.  Great machine, reliable as nails.
6 Hardware / Radeon 9200 on 7.6.1?

Any thoughts on whether it might be possible to modify Dan's Radeon 7000 driver to support the  Radeon 9200 Mac Edition on a PCI Power Mac running 7.6.1?

Interesting.

I'm curious as to whether this is a result of a different (possibly less compatible) batch of OWC memory, or a difference in the 8500's architecture vs. the 9600's.

I haven't tried any DV on the system. I did play several David Pogue video clips from old Macworld CDs - these didn't produce any visible artifacts. I'll look into the DV when I get a chance.

I did experience some startup issues when I first installed the upgrades. The first time I booted with the G4 and the OWC modules installed, the machine chimed as normal and booted to the desktop (at this point, the computer still had the TwinTurbo installed instead of the 7000). When I installed the ATI drivers and subsequently the 7000, the computer would chime very softly upon pressing the power key and the screen would remain black. I tried reverting back to the TwinTurbo without success, and the machine wouldn't boot until I tried the CUDA reset button. I played around with several configurations of RAM, G4/604e, and Radeon/TwinTurbo before getting the machine to boot successfully and reliably; it seems that the G4 (or Radeon?) didn't like having all of the RAM slots occupied when both the Radeon and G4 were installed (and I did hear the half-chime you are describing several times when playing around with different configs).

Have you tried different RAM configurations with the OWC modules/stock modules, and if so, did that have any effect on the boot problem? Also, I'd be interested to know whether you have a Radeon 7000 installed in your 8500, because I didn't experience any boot issues prior to installing mine.

In all honesty, it's THE fastest computer I have ever used in my life. It is blisteringly fast. My main machine is a 2GHz MBP (Core Duo) with 2GB RAM, which I find extremely responsive. The 9600, without a question, blows its socks off. Boot time isn't that great, due to the fact that there is no ascertainable way to bypass the memory tests on startup (and it has to check the entire 1GB). Other than that, though, it's more fun to use than any other system I've ever touched - I find myself wanting to use it for my main work. Nisus Writer, after all, is one hell of a word processor.

Now all I need is a Mac serial printer..

Hello all,

I stumbled upon this site last year, and found it very intriguing - mainly because I spent a great deal of time working with the classic Mac OS throughout the 90s, and hadn't touched OS 9 in years (much less 7.6.1). I was inspired to put together a vintage system, and wanted to base it on a PM 9600 (that was the system I'd always wanted but never had). After buying one in terrible shape, I had the good fortune of purchasing a new-in-box Power Mac 9600/350 from some dealer that was selling several of them on eBay. I had to put it all aside for a while because I didn't have the time to work on it, but I've picked it up again in the last few weeks and I think it's finally finished. :) I found my old binder full of classic games and software and have been inseparable from this thing (Oregon Trail II, Duke Nukem 3D, Escape Velocity, Meat Gone Bad, MacBrickOut, you name it) for the past few days. My girlfriend thinks I'm out of my mind.

This thing is a workhorse. Here's how it currently stands:

Power Macintosh 9600/1000 :)

OS: Mac OS 7.6.1
CPU: 1GHz Sonnet PowerPC G4 Processor
Memory: 1GB (8x128) Micron EDO DIMM RAM
Video: ATI Radeon 7000 64MB DVI/VGA PCI
HD: 73GB 10K Seagate 50-pin SCSI
Optical: 32x Apple SCSI CD-ROM
FDD: 1.44MB Apple SuperDrive, 100MB SCSI Iomega Zip
Misc: Sonnet TempoTrio
Internet: MacWireless 802.11g Ethernet Bridge

I got a new MacAlly Keyboard from eBay, and I'm using a Kensington ADB Optical Mouse from CompUSA (thought I'd leave the original Apple ADB KB/Mouse wrapped in the box).

Anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a new/refurbished 20-22" white/beige CRT monitor, either online or in south central TX?

Hats off to Dan for putting together such a great site.

I have one of those, got it at CompUSA for about $18 if I remember correctly. Very nice mouse. I have it connected to my 9600/350 running 7.6.1 that I got NIB off eBay - don't want to take the original Apple peripherals out of their packaging :)
13 Off Topic Discussion / OS 9.2.2 ATI Radeon Drivers
February 04, 2007, 21:40
Does anyone know where to find the ATI Radeon drivers compatible with Mac OS 9.2.2? They were available from the ATI web site a few months ago but it looks like they're gone. If anyone knows or happens to have a copy of them, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Nothing besides Mac OS 8, Internet Connection Kit, and the system CD.
15 Hardware / NIB 9600/350 Price?

It arrived today. I was very impressed with its condition - nine years is a long time for something to sit around sealed in its box. It appears to be one of the last 9600s ever shipped, as it has a shrinkwrapped copy of Mac OS 8 inside the box. I guess it has 7.6.1 pre-installed, but I'm hesitant to break the seal and boot the thing. :) The accessory box is still sealed, as is the plastic covering over the keyboard and the CPU itself. If anyone wants pictures I'll be glad to email them to you.
