1 Operating System / aw man...
December 04, 2006, 03:45
OS X 10.2.8

G4/400
384MB RAM
10 and 40GB HD's
DVD-ROM
external CD burner
17" silver eMachines monitor
Pro keyboard and mouse
stock 16MB Rage 128 AGP video

this thing flies...

now I just need moar video...

and I sold all my old stuff.  All I have left is the IIsi running 7.6.1, and the two kids' iMacs running 9.1

If I come across any more 99ยข computers, I still have 7.6.1 on a 250MB HD and will use it if I get the chance...

until then, thanks for all the help!
2 Operating System / Which computer to use to test 7.6.1?

I guess it'll be awhile before I can jump into the 7 world...I found a G4/400 on Dallas Craigslist for $60.  But I'll continue to try and sell the beige G3 and 6500 and 4400 and if I get enough out of selling them outright or parting them out, I'll put the 7600 together since it already has 7.6.1 on it and is ready to run except for a monitor.

And I just got 17 monitors off eBay for 99 cents, and although none of them are guaranteed to work, I also have two more Dell VGA monitors in the closet I could use with it.

One of the 17 is a 15" AppleVision A/V display, like the ones sold with 660av and 840av computers!  HDI-15 connector and all!  Wowzers!
3 Classifieds / FS on eBay: Radius NuBus 24-bit Graphics Card

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but I have two or three Radius 24-bit PCI video cards.  So if NuBus isn't your thing, reply here and I'll list them in my store (occupantiliedindustries).
4 Classifieds / Insane deal on fast Power Macs

There are a few sellers near me who have lots of computers for sale.  One of them has beige G3 desktops stacked floor to ceiling (I bought one for ten bucks last fall and haven't touched it since because I snagged an iMac the next morning).  Another has a ton of 5200-5400-5500 all-in-ones.  And the Arlington school district is dumping their beige G3's two at a time on eBay.  Another guy has a large stack of sad little G3/233 cacheless Powerbooks.  Then there's me, who sold off my other 4400-7600-8500 machines over the past few months in my eBay store.  I had bought a lot of sixteen mixed machines, stripped a few, kept a few, and sold the rest and more than tripled my money.

Unfortunately the 7600 I have is only a 120MHz machine.  But unless I find a cheap or nearly free 8600 or 9600, I may be best off using it then.  I just hope I have enough memory to make it run well.  Should be able to get 64MB or 80MB in it.  Some of these RAM chips I have are unlabeled and google searches of the numbers on them doesn't get me anywhere.

I guess the best way to figure out the RAM thing is fire up the 4400 with 8.6, which includes the Apple System Profiler, and put chips in two at a time and make a list of what's what.  Then take the biggest ones and put them in the 7600.  I think it has 8 slots so if I can find 6 16's in this mess, the 2 32's I have will bring me up to 160MB which ought to be enough.
6 Operating System / Which computer to use to test 7.6.1?

I have three to choose from.  Want some input on what is more important, speed, expandability, or memory...

4400/200...has 48MB RAM, a 2GB IDE HD, 8X CD-ROM, 4MB VRAM in it now...can be upgraded to 160MB of RAM...has room for 3 PCI cards...CD-ROM is only 12X but still works AFAIK...requires screwdriver to open case...still uses ADB input devices instead of USB...has built-in Ethernet...a Radius video card in the first PCI slot...could I use a USB PCI card in the second slot...will USB run under 7.6.1?

6500/225...stripped...could put in up to 128MB of RAM...room for CD-ROM and at least 2 HD's (1 SCSI, 1 IDE)...good looking but hard to take case apart...this ran very well under 8.6 and later 9.1 but the video was VERY slow...only 2 PCI slots and one has to go for Ethernet so I can use the DSL...so that leaves me only 1 PCI slot remaining and I'd want better video but also want to use a USB CD-RW drive I have as well as a digital camera my wife uses for work...again does USB work under 7?

7600/120...this has only 16MB of RAM in it AFAIK but it can be upgraded to a whopping 1GB of RAM...VRAM can only go to 4MB though...I think that's already maxed out...has built-in Ethernet and 3 free PCI slots but I think there's a Radius video card in the first one...

I'm thinking my best bet is to find a 200MHz 604e processor card for the 7600, max out the RAM, get a Radeon 7000 video card, drop in some decent size SCSI HD's, and roll with it.

But the 4400 has the best specs as of now and I think I have enough RAM lying around that I can get up to 64MB if not 72 or 80.  I may start out with that and then get the 7600 built up.

The 6500 has sentimental value and the highest clock speed but it's a 603e and only has one available PCI slot and that HAS to go for video.  I hated waiting for eBay Motors pages to load on that thing.  Took 2 minutes on average, and even longer if they post a lot of pictures!

Or I could try and find the big boy, the 9600/350, and load it up to 1.5GB of RAM, find all kinds of goodies to fill the 5 PCI slots remaining after putting in a video card, and let her run wild.

What do you think?
7 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?

Wow...now that my 400MHz iMac DV has decided not to boot anymore, I really want a G4.  BUT I have four perfectly good computers in the closet so I guess I could get some use out of them before putting any money into a G4 system.

Have a IIsi 5/40 with 7.0 on it and 7.0 on floppies, no reason to change that unless I find a bunch of 30-pin RAM and a good SCSI drive (I wonder if my 250MB out of my old Q610 still spins?).

Have a 7600/120 with I think 16MB of RAM and running 7.6.1

Have a 4400/200 which has 8.6 on it.

Have a stripped 6500/225 with NOTHING on it.

And I have a beige G3/266 but it can't run anything before 8.0, can it?

Maybe I should pool all my parts together and run 7.6.1 on the 4400.  I should be able to put either 64MB or 80MB of RAM, two 2GB hard drives (1 SCSI, 1 IDE), and a 24X CD-ROM.  That ought to be enough to stay online until I can afford something newer (or maybe I'll decide it's good enough?)

The last time I used 7 for anything was in 2001, when I was a cab driver, on a Duo 280C with 24MB of RAM and a 160MB HD running I think 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 and it was decent.  Had virtual memory set to 48MB and it was good for email, message boards, and eBay.  I had an Earthlink account and the built-in 19.2 modem always got me a solid connection.  A hotel maid knocked it off a bedside table and cracked the screen and that was the last time I used 7.  I was also running 7.6.1 on a Quadra 610 with 36MB RAM and a 250MB HD but I sold that computer (sans HD) before the laptop got broken.

The next computer I got was a 6500/225 for free, about 2 years later when I stopped driving cabs.  Since it already had 8.5 on it when I got it, I had it upgraded to 9.1 thinking newer is better.  By that time the drives crashed and it's been in my closet since.
