Software / Help installing Flash Player 5 and Speed Doubler 8
June 13, 2006, 05:03 |
I wanted to add a note to clarify something in my last post just in case someone has the same problem I had with Stuffit Expander not expanding *.sit files correctly. When I re-installed Stuffit Expander the first time (Jun 07, 2006), I deleted the Stuffit Expander folder off of my hard drive before I did the install. The second time I re-installed it, I left the directory there. I don’t know if that made any difference or if it was just a coincidence, but I wanted to let people know just in case. |

Software / Help installing Flash Player 5 and Speed Doubler 8

Success! Well I deleted Stuffit Expander's preferences, but that did not seem to help. So I proceeded to try and disable the “Stuffit Engine” from the Extensions Manager, but could not find it. So I decided I should try re-installing Stuffit Expander 5.5 again (I though I had already tried that once before, but maybe I didn’t). After re-installing Stuffit Expander 5.5, the *.sit files started working. Hurray! I was able to install Speed Doubler 8.0 and Flash Player 5. (Unfortunately some of the Flash Enabled website I went to did not work, but some of them did. It is probably the best I can expect from a product that is three versions back.) I plan to post some further questions in the near future, but for now I am just pleased I was able to get those items working. Thanks for you help, Matt |

New Member Welcome / $1 Power Macintosh 9500/132
June 08, 2006, 05:51 |
My company was getting rid of a bunch of old equipment recently and I was able to acquire an old Power Macintosh 9500/132 they had for a $1 (I was the high bidder ). I had to replace the PRAM Battery (about $10). It came with System 7.5.3 so I upgraded to 7.5.5. I found this website and read its recommendation to run System 7.6.1 and I also discovered that a lot of the Mac software for older machines required System 7.6.1. So I bought a copy of System 7.6 on eBay for $15 (including shipping and handling). Then I upgraded that to System 7.6.1. So I currently have a $26 PowerMac 9500/132 with the following: 48 MB of RAM 2 GB Hard drive PowerPC 604 - 132 MHz (I think) Is there a program I could run on the system that will tell me exactly what I have? The “About this computer” item in the Apple menu tells you the memory and OS version, but I don’t know how to verify the processor information. When I got it up and running, I searched through my old CDs for anything that might run on a Macintosh (I have never had one up to this point). To my surprise I discovered the following application that would run on my “new” Mac: Warcraft Warcraft II (including the expansion set) Tribond I was pleased to see Warcraft II would run, because the version I have would not run properly on Windows XP (you need the Battle Net edition for that). I may find some other things, but that is all I have found up to this point. Matt |

Software / Help installing Flash Player 5 and Speed Doubler 8
June 08, 2006, 05:09 |
Status Update I cleared the Internet Explorer cache. I deleted Internet Explorer and installed what I believe to be Internet Explorer 5.02. In the about box is says Version 5.0 (2022) Release 36. I deleted StuffIt Expander and reinstalled version 5.5. I downloaded the flashplayer5.sit file using IE. When I double-click on the file I get an error message saying StuffIt cannot be found. If I try to Expand the file manually using StuffIt, I get the error message from my original post. I then tried downloading the file with Netscape 4.05 (by the way, the site’s softwareguide.html file does not work correctly with Netscape 4.05 – but then again nor to most web pages out there today). When I download the file with Netscape, I get the same error whether I double-click the file or manually try to Expand it. The error I get is the same one from my original post. I tried downloading the sd8.sit file using both browsers and got the same error messge. At this point I see I have a few options: 1. See if anyone has the Flash Player 5 for Mac in a different format I can download. (I’ve looked some and have not found it. Not even Adobe (Macromedia’s new owners) has it on their website.) 2. Wipe the hard drive and start over (at least that is what I do on Windows boxes when they start acting weird like that). 3. Just do without Flash Player 5 and Speed Double 8. Any recommendations or advice? Thanks, Matt |

I have another correction to make. I am not sure I have ever gotten a *.sit file I’ve downloaded to work properly. I have gotten files with the name *.sit.hqx to work, but I don’t think I’ve been able to successfully download and use a *.sit file. |

I upgraded from System 7.5.3 to 7.5.5 to 7.6 to 7.6.1 over the course of the last few weeks. I have tried downloading it with IE Version 5.01 and Netscape 4. They both seem to have the same problem. |

Software / Help installing Flash Player 5 and Speed Doubler 8
June 08, 2006, 01:15 |
I recently obtained a PowerMac 9500 and I have upgraded its OS to System 7.6.1, but am having a little trouble installing some of the items available on this fine website. I am new to Macintosh, so I apologize if I ask some dumb questions. The specific two items I am having trouble with are the Flash Player 5 (flashplayer5.sit) and the Speed Doubler 8 (sd8.sit) downloads. When I try to open them with Stuffit Expander 5.5 (also obtained from this site) I get the following error: The application “unknown” has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 3 occurred. Other *.sit files have worked fine. It is just the two I have listed above that give me trouble. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt |
