1 Development / Re: VesperNet question

That's the beauty of the vespernet solution; you don't need one ;)

Sure, if you want to ;)

There is a severe lack of proper / detailed documentation on how it works, but it could also be me looking in the wrong direction ... so the whole thing is more or less trial and error by reading bits and bobs as they are discovered, this after getting it to "function" somewhat (connecting, negotiating, adressing etc)

You don't need both, the HTTP proxy is just a bridge for VesperNet; easier to apply than forcing a DNS server onto the system for some I reckon.

The proxy server uses the DNS server for lookups, while using the DNS directly eliminates the need for a proxy server.

As far as the account goes on domains.com, I don't think I made it a required field (but I can look that up and make sure later) - normally it would be an email address within the environment (vespernet).
There is still work to be done with many of the different services, so not everything is set up 100% yet, for instance email notifications and such.

The PPP feature is also part of VesperNet, and it will connect you to the environment as well as provide an internal IP as well as DNS (provided the system is capable, if not; set DNS manually)

VesperNet is split into .org for the "organizational" side of things, while .net is the service portal (which also provides PPP access). And if you check the Help section for the .net side, you'll notice that one account is viable for many different services.

search.com is currently the only search engine behind VN that works against all domains / zones provided by the DNS server (where access is given to the crawler)

Finally, given time ... I will hopefully be able to wrap up something I've been working on for a very long time, I'll leave the guesswork to the audience.

MacDomain retreated further into VesperNet, and has been rebranded Arc, so arc.net replaces macdomain.net/org and is also only available via VesperNet

Well, once you're settled in with your old devices I'm sure it'll be a breeze to get going at least ;D

Some fancy updates be coming soon-ish to multiple services, like WebDAV for the hosting, extended e-mail in case there will be more e-mail servers on the network (send and receive outside its own comfort zone, but remain -on- the network etc.)

Yes, but E-Mail is still isolated, you can't mail *to* a real world address, nor can you mail *from* a real world address *to* an address hosted at MacDomain. If that's what you mean.

Other than that, sending and receiving works just like in the real world, minus the spam.

I mean, MacDomain is publicly accessible with a near complete feature set for public internet use, there's no real need to use the Vesper DNS in this situation, if you just want to use/test the features available.

There's a small subset of features available only to DNS users, but it's fairly niche, you either use it or you don't and it doesn't impact the overall experience for MacDomain.

I haven't marketed it a whole lot, mentions here and there sure - and some blurbs of my achievements, so I fully expect that people easily forget what each service offers. It's still in development so I don't publish a whole lot of the detailed changes, though I do update this website whenever I feel like I have something of value to contribute.

It's not a small project by any means for one person, but if there are questions and such, I'm here. Also, on AIM / ICQ (fogwraith / 10000) when online.

Almost! The 68k Mac only uses the DNS server, in fact it's not even needed for this case specifically - the DNS runs off-site, as the good lord intended it, service separation :)

Another exciting update, which does involve the PPP magic to some extent ... look at this pretty picture

So, here we have battle.net (for testing purposes), battle.net is a QEMU VM with Mac OS 8 (68k), the start parameters excludes ethernet, there is no port forwarding. It only has access to serial (modem port).

battle.net "dials up" with help from the bridge software, registers the battle.net domain on the network domain registrar and points the domain to 10.0.0.1. Accessing this works exceptionally well for anyone else that "dials up" via the bridge software ... not so much for anyone only using the DNS server.

A wild development snapshot makes an appearance, a random computer is forced to use the DNS server (connected via WiFi), hits up battle.net in the web browser - and wouldn't you know it, it appears that it is now possible to reach the "lowest layer".

Don't you just love it when things just fall into place?

More output, more messages, more lauland-safe!
Version 1.5.1 of the bridge is available for testing. Stability improvements across the board, bit better handling on the backend as well. That or the server ran out of orphaned children to kill.

A strange issue, but at least now we know where to look ;)

Pushed some pretty fun updates onto the server as well, a bit more tweaking required ... but the weekend is nearly here, plenty of time :P

Log mentions headers for articles 1 through 17 "XHDR range: 1-17". It's skipping article 7.

There's also inconsistent in the header keys.
E.g Article 1 includes 'Newsgroups', while Article 3 includes 'X-Mailer', which Article 1 does not.

Check code to make sure that the log entries are formatted in a consistent way and that e.g. dates and times match -inconsistent formatting makes logs harder to read and parse.

It's skipping article 7 because it doesn't exist anymore, regarding the inconsistencies in the header keys, that's somewhat irrelevant as the right data is delivered correctly :)

Already fixed the code in my server (which also wasn't relevant since they were most likely trying another server) , I was just interested in finding out why they got the error, if it existed in my code (it did) and if I could fix it. Here's some InterNews 1.1 working. boop ;)

Some minor update notes, released version 1.1 and later 1.2 of the bridge today and an updated QEMU section in the emulators document.

v1.1 fixed the immediate issue with connecting with MacPPP, lesson learned - don't overcomplicate things.

v1.2 fixes random QEMU hard freezes / crashes when using pty/COMx directly, unix and tcp sockets appear to be a lot more stable (support for these two were added)

Apart from that, big thanks to Europa for helping me test some of the stuff, especially the communication between users and a method I do not have access to myself, bridge on a host <> serial cable to Macintosh <> real Macintosh "dials" out to VesperNet. <> internets access

Today was a great day.

I gave version 1.1 of InterNews a shot, just to see what it does, I don't know what it expects when it says "Could not show the newsgroup because of a program error (unexpected NNTP status received)"

As far as I can tell, it does the dance, but there could be something in the data it doesn't like, here's a bit of output. (I'll probably look at this for my own server to see if it can be resolved)

Here we go, the cross-platform bridge (crossbridge)

There are installation instructions, how to run the bridge and basic guides for emulators.
This is a first public release, I'll be happy with any feedback, but no feedback is also feedback, that means that it's probably working out.

Accounts
The basic requirement is an account registered via MacDomain, cballero, snes1423, bolkonskij and knezzen has had their accounts updated with configuration options that supply a basic 56k connection with 1 static IP on the Vesper network.

Once I see that things are working as intended, I will move on to the next steps, which include wrapping up the portal for this (currently not accessible to users), additional options (hopefully) PPPoE and VPN and more.
