We don't have an extensive list of FKEYs here at System 7 Today but we do keep a few helpful FKEYs around for you:
  • Fit to Mac: Great FKEY for Macs with few "screen estate". After invoking it via Command-Shift-F5, it moves the upper-left corner of the top window to the upper-left of the screen. No more windows out of view.
    Download fit_to_mac.sit

  • Send to Back: FKEY that sends the front window behind all others. Handy for cycling through windows, or just to get the front window quickly out of the way without using the mouse.
    Download send-to-back-10.hqx

  • Volume Setter:Essentially a shortcut for setting the sound level without having to do the trip to the Sound control panel.
    Download volume-setter-fkey.hqx

  • Toggle Sound: Another, older FKEY for quickly changing the volume level.
    Download toggle_sound_v1.1.4_.sit

  • Shutdown FKEY: Puts up an alert which gives the user a choice between shutting down, restarting, exiting to the Finder, or cancelling.
    Download shutdown-fkey.hqx

  • (Un)Quoter FKEY: Two FKEYs that help with quoting / unquoting on forums, e-mails, BBSes if no native quote function exists.
    Download quoter-fkey-18.hqx

  • Comment Wrap: Handy FKEY that allows (THINK) Pascal programmers to effortlessly reformat blocks of comments to wrap nicely.
    Download comment-wrap-fkey.hqx

  • GammaToggle: Lets you quickly switch between PC and Mac gamma levels. If you always knew the Windows guys were on the dark side, the gamma setting is proof.
    Download GammaToggleFKEY.cpt.hqx

  • TimeTalker: Hitting Command + Shift + 9 makes your Macintosh speak the current time. (requires MacInTalk extension to be installed).
    Download timetalker-fkey.sit

  • IIsi SoundFix: Fixes the issue of the IIsi speakers jumping to mute IF the problem is software based and not a hardware issue.
    Download IIsiSoundFixFKEY1.01.sit

  • Kill AppleTalk: Does what it promises - it will deactivate AppleTalk and issue a beep sound when done.
    Download Kill AppleTalk FKEY 1.0.sit

  • CleanSlate: After installation, cmd + shift + 5 will force all windows to update (redraw). Some people collapse their applications or move the windows off screen - it's no longer needed with this FKEY.
    Download cleanslate-fkey-1.0.sit

Found an FKEY for me. How to install it?

This used to be a bit of a nerdy process involving ResEditing the System File. With System 7 it's just enough to copy the FKEY to your Fonts folder within the System Folder. Fonts? That's right - for practical purposes FKEYs are usually distributed within font suitcases. By the way, you do not need to reboot, they work right away.

There’s even an install utility for FKEYs named FKEY Manager in case you'd rather use a utility for managing them.

You've got an awesome FKEY that you haven't listed here? Please let us know in forums!
