CodeWarrior was a key factor in Apple's transition from the 68k to the PowerPC processor thanks to a number of reasons. The other compilers at the time (Apple's Macintosh Programmer's Workshop and Symantec's THINK C) had initially no or less complete and slower PowerPC compilers.

CodeWarrior also automated the creation of FAT binaries of compiled applications, something that was a struggle with the other tools available. This led to CodeWarrior becoming the de facto development tool for the Macintosh. A position it held up until the Mac OS X days, when Apple started distributing it's own software development kit, based on NeXTStep tools, for free to registered developers.

Here's a quick guide for setting up CodeWarrior the first time.
